In Sadhguru’s explanation, fasting during Navratri is a way to stay conscious of the festival’s progression and is associated with spiritual purification—not a medically established method for detoxifying the body or improving immunity. Isha lists Navratri 2026 as 11–19 October and describes the nine days through a Yogic framework of Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. These are source-specific teachings; Hindu observances and fasting customs vary by region.

When is Navratri in 2026?

Isha Sadhguru lists Navratri 2026 as running from 11 to 19 October. Its article, published 25 September 2026, describes the nine days as a time of the Divine Feminine in Yogic culture. The dates and interpretation here reflect Isha’s account, not a claim that every community follows the same calendar or observance.

A Sadhguru Darshan video page dated 21 September 2026 says the episode discusses Navratri beyond celebration and tradition, including fasting and Vijayadashami. Its description identifies the topics but does not provide a transcript of his exact comments on fasting.

Why does Sadhguru say people fast?

Sadhguru presents fasting as a way to keep attention on the nine-day festival. In Isha’s explanation, he says: “When there is food in the stomach, you forget what day it is, but if you are fasting you will be very conscious of what day it is.” He adds: “So, to make you very conscious and also to bring a certain level of purification in the body, you are supposed to fast.”

In this teaching, the fast has a spiritual and attentional purpose: it acts as a reminder of the festival’s days and is associated with purification. The statement is a religious explanation, not clinical evidence that fasting removes toxins or produces a particular health benefit.

How does Isha explain the nine days?

Isha describes the nine days in three groups, connecting each to a form of the Divine Feminine and one of three qualities in its Yogic framework:

Navratri days Isha’s association Quality
First three Durga Tamas
Next three Lakshmi Rajas
Final three Saraswati Sattva

Isha says Vijayadashami, the tenth day, represents conquering these three qualities. This is Isha’s explanation of Navratri’s spiritual symbolism, not a single framework that defines all Hindu traditions. In a separate article published 20 March 2023, Sadhguru notes that “Navratri literally means ‘nine nights’” and explains the festival through the same figures and qualities.

Does Navratri fasting have proven health effects?

Isha’s festival overview says that fasting—or replacing heavy grains with fresh fruit and vegetables—is spiritually thought to bring energy and balance. It also makes claims about immunity and toxin cleansing. The cited overview does not provide clinical evidence for those health claims, so they should be understood as claims made by Isha, not established medical effects.

Neither Sadhguru’s spiritual rationale nor the material supporting these claims establishes a medically validated detoxification effect or immunity benefit. The sources also do not compare fasting regimens as medical interventions. Keep the distinction clear: the teaching explains what fasting is meant to signify within a spiritual practice; it does not demonstrate what fasting does clinically.

Is there one Navratri fasting rule?

No single fasting regimen is established as universal by Isha’s overview. It describes varied regional observances, including daytime fasting followed by evening festivities in some places, and a fast during the first seven days in Punjab. Other local customs also differ. Those examples do not amount to a complete guide to every region, and Sadhguru’s explanation should not be read as a prescription for all devotees.

Anyone considering fasting should choose in light of their own health and circumstances rather than treating a spiritual explanation as individualized medical advice. The sources cited here do not specify a universal fasting schedule or give clinical guidance for deciding who should fast.

Is Isha’s 2026 Navratri Sadhana required?

No. Linga Bhairavi lists an optional online Navratri Sadhana for 11–19 October 2026, with daily guided sessions in English, Hindi, and Tamil. It is a devotional program, not a prerequisite for fasting.
