Use Graylog to monitor software by collecting the application’s logs, searching and visualizing useful fields, and defining events that trigger notifications. Graylog’s documented OpenTelemetry gRPC input can receive application logs through an OpenTelemetry Collector. That log workflow is distinct from collecting application metrics or traces; Graylog’s optional Prometheus exporter exposes metrics about Graylog itself.

What Graylog monitors—and what it does not

Graylog is a log-management and analysis platform. It can help you investigate application messages such as exceptions, authentication events, and request outcomes, provided your software emits those messages and they reach Graylog.

Logs are not the same as time-series metrics or distributed traces. The OpenTelemetry input discussed here is for logs, while Graylog’s Prometheus exporter exposes Graylog’s own operational metrics. The cited documentation does not establish that either replaces a full application metrics, tracing, or APM system. See Graylog’s product overview.

Choose an edition for the features you need

Graylog describes Open as free, open-source centralized log management, with Enterprise adding capabilities such as correlation, archiving, reporting, and premium support. Choose based on required features and support needs, and confirm current licensing for any named capability in the Graylog product overview. Alert capabilities also vary by type and entitlement; the current alerts documentation says Enterprise is required for script and PagerDuty alerts.

Send application logs to Graylog

Use the OpenTelemetry gRPC input

  1. Prepare an OpenTelemetry Collector. Graylog’s current OpenTelemetry gRPC input documentation lists a Collector as a prerequisite.
  2. Create and configure the Graylog input. Follow the version-specific instructions to create the OpenTelemetry gRPC input and configure the Collector to send logs to it. Graylog’s examples are not a complete Collector configuration; adapt authentication, transport security, and deployment settings to your environment.
  3. Protect the endpoint. Do not use an insecure, unauthenticated example for an endpoint exposed to untrusted networks. Restrict network access and configure transport security and authentication as appropriate for your deployment.
  4. Send a test message and inspect its fields. Confirm that logs arrive and that their fields can be searched and used in widgets and event conditions.

For a practical monitoring setup, make sure messages carry consistent fields for service or application identity, severity, and environment. Include measurements such as response time only if the application actually emits them. These are instrumentation recommendations, not fields Graylog automatically supplies.

Search logs and build a service dashboard

Start with a query that isolates the service and time period you want to investigate. Check that the results contain the fields you expect, then save the query if it will be reused. Build a dashboard around operational questions rather than a collection of every available field.

  • Use a time-series widget to follow exception or error volume.
  • Break counts down by service, severity, or environment to identify where activity is concentrated.
  • Use a single-value widget for a useful count over the selected period.
  • Include a message table when operators need to inspect the individual log entries behind an aggregate.

Graylog dashboards support widgets over log data, including aggregated charts, single values, and message tables. The dashboards documentation describes dashboard creation and widget use.

Turn a condition into an alert

Use an event definition to express an actionable condition in the data. Graylog’s event-definition model can include a search query, stream, time window, and aggregation; an event is created when the configured filter matches. You can attach a notification to the event.

  1. Choose the data scope. Select the stream and query that identify the relevant service and messages.
  2. Set the evaluation window and aggregation. Match these to the condition you care about—for example, an error count within a time window, rather than a query that fires for every ordinary message.
  3. Attach a notification. Pick a supported alert type for your edition and configure its destination.
  4. Test the complete path. Generate or identify a matching event, verify the event appears, and confirm the notification reaches its destination before relying on it.
  5. Set an appropriate priority. Reserve the most urgent level for conditions that require immediate action.

Consult the current event definitions, alerts, and alert types documentation for available options and edition requirements.

Monitor Graylog’s own operational health separately

If you also want to monitor the Graylog service, its optional Prometheus exporter exposes Graylog operational metrics. The documented default endpoint is http://127.0.0.1:9833/api/metrics/prometheus on port 9833; Prometheus can scrape it. The bind address, firewall rules, and exporter security are deployment-specific, so do not assume the loopback default is reachable—or appropriate—from another host. See Graylog operational metrics.

Plan for deployment and ongoing learning

For a larger Enterprise installation, Graylog says its partners and resellers can help with architecture, deployment, and support. Graylog also offers Academy courses and a resource library for further learning. The implementation details and feature entitlements described in Graylog’s documentation are version-sensitive; consult the current Graylog 7.1 documentation and verify the instructions for the version you deploy.
