Telegram’s documented IP-address exposure concern is peer-to-peer (P2P) voice and video calls—not ordinary text chats. In a direct P2P call, the other participant may in theory learn your IP address. Telegram says you can disable P2P so calls are relayed through its servers, avoiding disclosure of your IP to the other participant, with a possible reduction in audio and video quality.
Does Telegram reveal your real IP to your contacts?
Not simply because you exchange messages. The evidence here concerns Telegram calls: Pavel Durov, Telegram’s CEO, says that in a P2P call traffic flows directly between participants and the other person may in theory learn your IP address. Telegram’s call protocol documentation likewise describes call setup as involving either the other party’s IP address or Telegram relay-server addresses. Durov’s explanation and Telegram’s call protocol documentation describe routing mechanics; they do not establish that contacts can see your IP through ordinary text chats.
An IP address is a network-routing identifier, not automatic proof of a person’s legal identity. The available Telegram material does not quantify how often callers use direct P2P connections or establish that an address by itself identifies a particular person.
How P2P calling can expose an IP address
For a direct connection, each participant’s device needs network information to reach the other device. That means the other participant may learn the IP address used for the call. This is a routing-level issue, separate from whether call content is encrypted: Telegram describes calls as end-to-end encrypted while its protocol documentation also discusses IP-address negotiation.

Telegram’s setting text offers the relevant distinction: with P2P disabled, calls are relayed through Telegram servers rather than directly between participants. The call participant is then not shown your IP address through that direct P2P connection, according to Telegram’s stated purpose for the setting.

The P2P quality description and fallback come from Telegram’s call announcement. The relay setting’s stated effect and trade-off appear in Telegram’s setting text. These are Telegram’s descriptions, not independent measurements of current client behavior.

How to reduce IP exposure during Telegram calls
Look in Telegram’s call privacy or peer-to-peer calling settings for the option to disable P2P. Telegram’s setting text says that disabling it relays all calls through Telegram servers. The exact menu path can vary by client, and current click-by-click paths for Android, iOS, desktop, and web are not established here; use the setting label in your version rather than relying on a universal path.
This changes how calls are routed; it is not a claim that all network activity in Telegram is hidden. Telegram also warns that server relaying may reduce call quality.

What the available evidence does not show
- It does not show that Telegram exposes your IP to contacts during ordinary text messaging.
- It does not show that every Telegram call uses P2P or that every participant can identify a person from an IP address alone.
- It does not provide a prevalence rate or independent, version-by-version tests of current apps.
- It does not support treating end-to-end encryption as protection against IP visibility inherent in direct network routing.
