Yes. A home security camera in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, recorded a meteorite striking the walkway in July 2024. The footage captures a burst of dust and fragments and the impact sound; the fast-moving rock itself appears in just one frame. Scientists later confirmed recovered fragments were a meteorite and named it the Charlottetown Meteorite.
What the Ring camera recorded
In July 2024, homeowners noticed a star-shaped patch of grey dust on the walkway outside their Charlottetown home. When they reviewed their security-camera footage, they found the moment a rock fell from the sky, scattered dust and fragments, and made an audible impact. The University of Alberta reports that the rock is visible in only one frame because it was moving so quickly, while the dust burst and sound are clear in the recording. University of Alberta, January 13, 2025.
The recording matters because it documents more than a visual event: the camera captured the impact audio as well as the dust plume and the brief appearance of the rock. The University of Alberta says it is likely the first and only recording of the sound of a meteorite hitting Earth. That is the university’s characterization of the event, rather than a claim that every meteorite fall has been monitored.
Where it landed and what happened to the homeowners
The meteorite landed on a walkway at a home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Chris Herd, curator of the University of Alberta Meteorite Collection and a Faculty of Science professor, visited the site and measured a 2 x 2 cm divot in the walkway. No injuries or major property damage were reported.

HotHardware reported that homeowner Joe Velaidum had been standing at the impact spot only minutes before the fall. Velaidum described the sound as “sounded like a loud, crashing, gunshot bang.” The same secondary report gives an approximate speed estimate of 125 mph (200 km/h); the University of Alberta’s release does not provide a measured speed, so that figure should be treated as HotHardware’s estimate, not a university measurement. HotHardware, January 17, 2025.
How scientists confirmed it was a meteorite
The homeowners initially recovered about 7 grams of material and collected more fragments over the following days. Herd examined photographs, visited the impact site and assessed the fragments. He confirmed that the recovered pieces were a meteorite; the measured walkway divot provided additional physical evidence of an impact.

The specimen was named the Charlottetown Meteorite and classified as an ordinary chondrite. Selected fragments became part of the University of Alberta Meteorite Collection. Herd described its significance this way: “As the first and only meteorite from the province of PEI, the Charlottetown Meteorite sure announced its arrival in a spectacular way. No other meteorite fall has been documented like this, complete with sound. It adds a whole new dimension to the natural history of the Island.”

The official account establishes the impact location, the recovered fragments, the ordinary-chondrite classification and the collection’s custody of selected pieces. It does not give a numerical estimate for the meteorite’s mass, speed or atmospheric entry angle. The approximately 125 mph (200 km/h) figure appears in HotHardware’s secondary coverage, not as a University of Alberta measurement.
