Setting an Xbox One to output 1080p does not mean every game is rendered at 1080p. If a title renders below that resolution, the console or game scales the image up to fill the screen; scaling enlarges existing pixels but cannot restore detail that was never rendered. The result can look softer, or make shimmering and edge artifacts more noticeable. The effect depends on the game, console model, display, and their respective scaling processes.
Does Xbox One upscale games to 1080p?
The console’s selected output resolution and a game’s internal render resolution are different things. A game can render below 1080p, then reconstruct or scale its image for the console’s 1080p output. Microsoft’s developer guidance notes that most games use some form of dynamic resolution, so the internal resolution can vary with the game’s workload. That does not mean every Xbox One game renders below 1080p; resolution is title-specific.

Upscaling fills the output frame with a larger version of the available image. It does not add the fine detail that a native 1080p render could contain. Depending on the game’s rendering and reconstruction, a lower-resolution image scaled to 1080p may appear soft, while shimmering or ringing around edges can also be more apparent.
Why can 1080p look worse than 4K on a TV?
On a 4K TV, the Xbox One S can upscale 1080p content to 4K output; Microsoft describes this behavior in its Xbox One S 4K and HDR overview. The TV then displays that signal across its 4K panel. A different scaler in the TV can add softness or ringing, so a game’s lower-resolution render, console scaling, and display processing can all affect the final picture.

More pixels in the output signal do not guarantee more detail in the game image. Xbox One X Enhanced titles may use higher-resolution or supersampled rendering paths, but those features vary by title. Microsoft explains that supersampling starts with a higher-resolution image and scales it down to the display’s resolution, unlike enlarging a lower-resolution image. Check the official Xbox One X Enhanced game list for title-specific details, including games identified with 2160p output.
Is the Xbox or TV doing the upscaling?
It can be both, depending on the console output setting and the TV’s native resolution. For example, when an Xbox One S sends 1080p content to a 4K display, the console can upscale that content to 4K. The TV still processes the incoming signal to display it on its panel, and its settings can affect the appearance. A 4K signal indicator therefore does not prove that the game rendered natively at 4K.

TV Game Mode is a useful diagnostic because it reduces extra display processing and latency. It will not restore detail missing from a game’s render, but it can help distinguish game or console scaling from additional TV processing. Microsoft’s Xbox One S overview also discusses Game Mode.
How to diagnose a blurry Xbox One picture
- Identify the hardware. Note whether the console is a base Xbox One, Xbox One S, or Xbox One X, and check the TV’s native resolution.
- Set a neutral display baseline. Turn on the TV’s Game Mode and temporarily disable extra sharpening and noise-reduction presets. These controls make it easier to judge the image without adding as much display processing.
- Compare the same scene. If the game offers performance and quality modes, view the same scene in each mode. Image quality and frame-rate stability can differ by title and mode.
- Change console output only after the display baseline is set. Compare available output settings under the same TV conditions; otherwise, changes in TV processing can muddy the comparison.
- Check title-specific resolution information. Look for an Xbox One X Enhanced designation and any documented resolution mode. Do not infer native 4K rendering from a 4K output signal alone.
Should you set Xbox One to 720p instead of 1080p?
There is no universal reason to lower the console’s output to 720p to fix a soft-looking game. A game rendering below 1080p can still be scaled to whichever output you select, and lowering the output does not create the missing detail. The picture also depends on how the console and TV handle scaling. Compare settings with Game Mode enabled and judge the same game scene on your own display rather than assuming 720p will look better.

What affects the result?
- Game and mode: Native render resolution, dynamic resolution, reconstruction, and any quality or performance options differ by title. Microsoft’s game-development guidance says most games use some kind of dynamic resolution and discusses upscaling and downsampling.
- Console model: The base Xbox One, One S, and One X do not imply the same rendering or output path for every game. One X Enhanced features are title-specific.
- TV scaler and processing: The display’s scaling and picture settings can make the final image look different, even with the same console signal.
- Viewing conditions: Display size and viewing distance affect how visible softness or artifacts are. There is no universal percentage that describes the image-quality loss from Xbox One upscaling.
