Honda’s UNI-CUB was designed to move a seated rider through barrier-free indoor spaces—not to replace everyday walking. It can travel in every direction at up to 6 km/h, but Honda’s stated range is 6 km, and the available evidence describes demonstrations and a business leasing program rather than a mass-market consumer product.
What the Honda UNI-CUB is
Honda announced UNI-CUB on May 15, 2012, as a compact personal-mobility device intended to move in harmony with people. The rider shifts body weight to control speed and direction. Honda’s Omni Traction Drive System enables forward, backward, sideways, and diagonal movement, with the device fitting between the rider’s legs. Honda said it offers “the same freedom of movement in all directions that a person enjoys while walking.” Honda’s 2012 announcement describes the concept, while its technology page connects the balance-control work to humanoid-robot research represented by ASIMO.
How it compares with walking and Segway-style devices
UNI-CUB’s notable difference is its seated, compact, omnidirectional design. It was intended for barrier-free indoor settings, where moving sideways or turning in place can help navigate shared spaces. It does not make walking obsolete: the stated 6 km/h maximum speed and 6 km range describe a limited-use mobility device, not a demonstrated replacement for walking in daily life.
It is also not a like-for-like Segway comparison. Honda’s sources establish UNI-CUB’s indoor design and capabilities, but do not provide matched Segway specifications. Broadly, UNI-CUB is a seated device for compact indoor movement, unlike stand-up personal transport devices commonly associated with broader outdoor travel; exact comparisons depend on the specific Segway model.

Honda’s figures come from its technology materials and product announcements for the original UNI-CUB and UNI-CUB β. Range and operating time are manufacturer-stated figures, not independent test results.
Demonstrations and commercial availability
Honda said demonstration testing with the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) began in June 2012. Museum staff used UNI-CUB for transportation inside the facility, and visitors of different ages used it for tours. In November 2013, Honda announced UNI-CUB β, incorporating user feedback and adding a stand to make getting on and off easier. Honda said it would offer the β to businesses and organizations through a fee-based leasing program to assess business feasibility. Honda’s 2013 announcement documents those plans.

UNI-CUB’s strongest fit is controlled indoor travel in barrier-free facilities—such as museums, offices, libraries, malls, or airports—where compact maneuvering is useful and the space can accommodate the device. Whether it is practical in any particular venue depends on access conditions, rider needs, and availability of the device. Honda’s sources document its intended environment and demonstrations, not broad adoption or replacement of walking.
