Apple’s 2014 launch confirmed two phones: the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, with a 1334 × 750 Retina HD display, and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, with a 1920 × 1080 display. The final leaks largely anticipated the rounded aluminium design, relocated power button, protruding camera and A8 chip. They did not establish every detail: sapphire displays, exact battery capacities and several storage or camera claims remained uncertain or were not borne out as firm specifications.
What were the final iPhone 6 specs?
Apple announced the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on 9 September 2014. The specifications below distinguish Apple’s confirmed features from details that circulated as pre-launch reports.
| Feature | iPhone 6 | iPhone 6 Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 4.7-inch LED-backlit IPS Retina HD; 1334 × 750 pixels (Apple, 2014) | 5.5-inch Retina HD; 1920 × 1080 pixels (Apple, 2014) |
| Processor | Apple A8, second-generation 64-bit chip, with an image signal processor (Apple, 2014) | |
| Rear camera | 8-megapixel iSight camera; 1.5-micron pixels (Apple technical specifications) | |
| Connectivity and sensors | NFC, LTE, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, assisted GPS/GLONASS, digital compass and iBeacon microlocation (Apple technical specifications) | |
| Reported pre-launch dimensions | 138 × 66 × 6.9 mm (MacRumors leak report, 22 August 2014) | 158 × 78 × 7.1 mm; reported as 7.7 mm at the camera protrusion (MacRumors leak report, 22 August 2014) |
Apple described the displays as having higher contrast and dual-domain pixels. Its announcement said the phones used a precision unibody made from anodised aluminium and conformed to shaped glass. Apple described the A8 as faster and more energy efficient than its predecessor, but those descriptions are not a complete performance comparison between the two phone sizes.
How accurate were the final iPhone 6 leaks?
MacRumors’ 22 August 2014 report, attributed to a Foxconn source, anticipated several visible design features and the A8 processor. A separate rumor roundup gathered recurring claims but cautioned that leaked parts could not be authenticated. A leak’s resemblance to the finished phone is not the same as confirmation of every associated specification.

| Pre-launch claim | What Apple’s launch or specifications established | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models | Apple launched iPhone 6 at 4.7 inches and iPhone 6 Plus at 5.5 inches. | Correct. |
| Rounded body, antenna bands and relocated power button | Apple confirmed the aluminium unibody and shaped-glass design. The rounded appearance and right-side power-button placement matched the final phones. | Broadly right on the visible design. |
| Protruding camera ring | The final design had a camera that protruded from the rear surface. | Right. |
| A8 processor | Apple confirmed the second-generation 64-bit A8. | Right. |
| Improved camera | Apple specified an 8-megapixel iSight camera and described camera and video processing features enabled by the A8’s image signal processor. | Directionally right, but the claim alone did not specify the final camera details. |
| NFC | Apple’s technical specifications list NFC; Apple Pay was enabled by NFC. | Correct. |
| Sapphire display glass | The rumor roundup reported conflicting scratch-test indications. The Foxconn report mentioned display containers but supplied no proof of sapphire glass. | Unresolved in the leak cycle; the reports were not evidence that the display was sapphire. |
| Exact battery capacities, 1GB RAM, 16GB base storage, Qualcomm LTE modem, barometric sensing, or 128GB/OIS differences on the larger model | The cited launch announcement and technical-specification material do not establish these rumor-roundup details as confirmed launch specifications. | Do not treat the roundup’s claims as confirmed facts. |

What did the iPhone 6 look like before it launched?
The final leak cycle described a design that was recognizably close to the finished iPhone: rounded corners and casing, a shaped-glass front flowing into an aluminium body, antenna bands across the rear, and a power button moved to the right side. The volume controls were described as pill-shaped, and the rear camera was expected to sit in a raised ring. Apple’s launch presentation confirmed the aluminium-and-shaped-glass construction; the form and controls were apparent in the final product.

- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
The leak report gave dimensions of 138 mm long, 66 mm wide and 6.9 mm thick for the 4.7-inch model. For the 5.5-inch model it reported 158 × 78 × 7.1 mm, with 7.7 mm at the camera protrusion. These are reported leak measurements, not figures quoted in Apple’s cited announcement. Likewise, rumors of a cut-out rear logo or an embedded logo should not be confused with Apple’s confirmed description of the material and enclosure.
Was the iPhone 6 really 4.7 inches?
Yes. Apple’s iPhone 6 had a 4.7-inch display with 1334 × 750 pixels. The larger iPhone 6 Plus was a separate 5.5-inch model with 1920 × 1080 pixels. Both were marketed as Retina HD displays; the larger screen size and resolution belong to the Plus, not the standard iPhone 6.

Did iPhone 6 have NFC and a better camera?
Yes to NFC: Apple’s technical specifications list it, and NFC enabled Apple Pay. Apple also confirmed an 8-megapixel iSight rear camera with 1.5-micron pixels. Its A8 chip included an image signal processor for camera and video features. That confirms the hardware and Apple’s stated processing support; broad leak language such as “improved camera” is not, by itself, a precise measurement of image quality.

Which leak claims should be treated cautiously?
- Sapphire: The reports cited conflicting scratch-test indications, and the mention of display containers did not identify their material. The leak evidence described here does not confirm a sapphire iPhone 6 display.
- Battery capacities and storage: The rumor roundup discussed larger batteries, 16GB base storage and a possible 128GB option, but the cited Apple announcement and specification page do not establish those claims. Do not report them as confirmed launch specifications on the strength of those rumors.
- RAM, modem and sensors: Claims including 1GB RAM, a Qualcomm LTE modem and barometric sensing were reported before launch; they are not confirmed by the cited Apple material.
- Camera differences by size: The roundup mentioned possible optical image stabilization (OIS) differentiation for the larger model. The cited sources do not establish that claim as a confirmed distinction, so it should not be presented as settled by the final leak reports.
