Mozilla’s Firefox “AI Window” concept is now called Smart Window: an optional desktop browsing window with an assistant that can work with tabs and, when you ask, browsing history. It can summarize, compare and organize information, but it cannot click buttons, fill forms or complete transactions. Smart Window is in early beta, requires a Mozilla account and is available only in supported regions and languages.
What happened to Firefox AI Window?
Mozilla introduced the AI Window concept on November 13, 2025, describing an opt-in, user-controlled space in Firefox and inviting people to join a waitlist and give feedback. By the August 18, 2026 product announcement, the feature was branded Smart Window. Mozilla updated that announcement on September 16, 2026, noting France as its first expansion beyond North America.
The names reflect different stages of the same Firefox effort, rather than two separate products. Mozilla’s 2026 roadmap still uses “AI Window” as a strategic label for opt-in AI work in Firefox; Smart Window is the name used for the beta experience.
What can Smart Window do?
Use selected browsing context
You can ask the assistant to summarize a page, compare information across open tabs, make recommendations or help plan a task. You can start a chat from Smart Window’s New Tab page or sidebar. Chats are saved automatically and can be deleted.

If you explicitly ask about browsing history, the assistant can use that context too. Mozilla’s September 2026 product announcement also describes visual history previews and suggestions for grouping tabs. Memories can help connect information across Smart and Classic Windows, subject to the settings and limits described below.
Find current information
Smart Window can use Exa to retrieve current web information and show sources behind an answer, so you can check where the information came from without opening a separate results page. Mozilla says the assistant may search with Exa automatically when a question needs current facts or information beyond the current page, open tabs or memories.
Organize tabs, but not act on websites
You can use natural-language requests to organize or close tabs. The assistant does not click website buttons, fill in forms, make purchases, book flights or hotels, change Firefox settings, or sign in to websites using saved credentials. You remain responsible for taking actions on the web.
Is Smart Window available where you live?
Mozilla Support describes Smart Window as an early beta for Firefox desktop. Availability is limited to users of en-US, en-CA and French, with a Mozilla account required.

Mozilla said France was the first new market beyond North America and that further European expansion was planned later in 2026. That is a plan, not confirmation that Smart Window is already available in every European country.
How do you open or switch to Smart Window?
- Open a new Smart Window: Use the Firefox menu to open one, if the feature is available for your account and region.
- Switch an existing window: You can switch a Classic Window to Smart Window while keeping its tabs intact.
- Make it the default window type: Starting with Firefox 151.0.2, users can set Smart Window as the default window type when it is available and onboarding is complete.
- Start a chat: Open the Smart Window New Tab page or sidebar and enter a request.
Mozilla’s documentation does not establish a more specific menu path than opening Smart Window from the Firefox menu.
Does Smart Window read your browsing history?
It can use history when you explicitly ask about it; this is not the same as unrestricted access to everything you do in Firefox. Mozilla says the assistant can access the current page, open tabs you reference and history you specifically ask about. It cannot access Private Window activity, passwords, payment information, unread email or files stored on your device.
Chats, memories and requests
Mozilla says chats and memories are stored locally. Memories are optional: they can draw on Smart Window chats and browsing activity in Smart and Classic Windows, but never Private Window activity. You can view or delete memories, or turn them off.
When you send a request, it goes to Mozilla’s servers and is forwarded to the AI model provider. Mozilla says providers see requests as coming from Mozilla rather than from an individual user. That describes how the request is presented to the provider; it does not mean the request stays only on your device.
Account and model-provider settings
Using Smart Window requires a Mozilla account. Mozilla’s Privacy Notice says Smart Window-specific processing is covered by a separate notice. You can select a model endpoint in settings; if you choose a third-party endpoint, its own terms and privacy notice apply.

Which AI model and search service power Smart Window?
Mozilla selected Mistral Small 4 for the Smart Window beta after evaluating performance, including multilingual capability. France is the first market with official French support. Exa is the search partner used to retrieve current web information and show sources for answers.
Firefox’s broader AI controls also support sidebar chatbot providers including Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Le Chat Mistral. These are provider choices for the sidebar, not a claim that all of them power Smart Window’s built-in assistant.

How do you turn Smart Window or Firefox AI features off?
To block Smart Window, go to Firefox Settings > AI controls. Mozilla’s AI controls also let users turn individual features—such as translations, PDF image alt text, tab-group suggestions and key points in link previews—on or off, and choose among enabled sidebar chatbot providers. These individual controls are distinct from blocking Smart Window; Mozilla’s roadmap describes broader controls for current and future AI features.
What are Smart Window’s practical limits?
Mozilla says daily chat limits apply and reset at midnight Eastern Time. If you reach a limit, you cannot continue chatting until it resets, but ordinary browsing in Smart Window remains available. The assistant can help interpret and organize information; it does not carry out transactions or other website actions for you.
