Pencil2D is free, open-source software for making traditional, frame-by-frame 2D animations with bitmap (raster) or vector artwork. Its simple layout centers on a drawing canvas, a timeline of keyframes, and layers, making it a practical starting point for hand-drawn animation on Windows, macOS, or Linux.
What is Pencil2D?
Pencil2D is an animation and drawing application focused on traditional 2D hand-drawn work. The project describes it as an “easy, intuitive tool to make 2D hand-drawn animations.” You draw individual frames, arrange them on a timeline, and play them back to see the motion.
It supports both bitmap (raster) and vector workflows. Raster artwork is made from pixels; vector artwork uses shapes and paths. That gives you a choice of drawing approach within the same frame-based animation workflow.
Is Pencil2D free, and can you use it commercially?
Yes. Pencil2D is free and open source, and its official site says it is free to use “even commercially.” The project repository identifies the software’s license as GPL-2.0. See the official Pencil2D site and the project repository for the project’s statements and license information.

Which operating systems does Pencil2D support?
As listed on the official download page, Pencil2D v0.7.2 is available for Windows 7 and later, macOS 10.14 and later on Intel, and 32-bit and 64-bit Linux. The page also lists distribution-specific options for Arch Linux, Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora 26 and later, Flatpak, FreeBSD, and Homebrew. Package availability and installation steps can vary by operating system and distribution; check the official download page for the current options.
The download page lists v0.7.2 as the current stable version and was last updated on 13 March 2026. The Pencil2D Team announced that release on 26 March 2026, describing it as a stability-and-polish update with 18 bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. Among the changes are clearer save and load error messages, a button for copying diagnostic details, corrected exported-image extension handling, and a macOS DMG package. The download page also lists nightly and legacy builds. Its warning says legacy builds may lack the latest security fixes and may receive limited support, so a current stable download is the safer default unless you have a specific reason to use another build.
How do you make a hand-drawn animation in Pencil2D?
The basic process is to draw on the canvas, create and organize frames on the timeline, then preview the sequence. The user manual describes the menu bar for tasks such as opening and saving projects, importing images, and adding layers; dockable panels provide tools, colors, and settings.

- Start a project and orient yourself. Use the menu bar for project and file actions. The central area is the canvas; the timeline tracks keyframes, while dockable panels hold drawing tools, colors, and settings.
- Choose a layer and drawing approach. Add or select a layer, then choose bitmap or vector tools according to the kind of artwork you want to create.
- Draw the first frame. Make the initial pose on the canvas. Add keyframes on the timeline for the poses or changes that define the motion, drawing on the appropriate frame each time.
- Preview the motion. Play the sequence to check how the drawings read together. The canvas extends beyond the bright camera rectangle; that rectangle marks the preview area used when exporting an animation to video or image.
- Save and export. Save the project as you work. For an animated GIF, use File > Export > Animated GIF…. For other output, review the export dialog in your installed build, since the available formats and options can vary.
Pencil2D’s interface is organized around drawing and frame sequencing rather than a single finished image. For an overview of the canvas, timeline, and panels, consult the official manual; the camera area and GIF command are also described in the official FAQ.
Do you need a drawing tablet?
No special hardware requirement is stated in the official materials. A drawing tablet is an optional input device: a pen can make freehand drawing feel more natural than a mouse, but Pencil2D itself is drawing software, not a tablet. If you are considering one, confirm that the device supports your operating system and works with your computer before buying; the Pencil2D project does not endorse a particular tablet.

Who is Pencil2D best suited to?
Pencil2D is a good fit if you want a free, open-source tool centered on traditional frame-by-frame 2D animation and want to draw with raster or vector graphics. Its canvas-and-timeline model is also a straightforward way to learn how individual drawings combine into movement.
It is less appropriate if your main need is a particular export format, advanced production feature, or a guaranteed level of support: confirm those requirements in the documentation and the dialogs in your installed version before building a workflow around them. The project’s official materials do not publish user-base, performance, or market-share statistics, so those are not useful measures of whether it will fit your project.
