LG’s first TVs with Intel WiDi were announced on December 15, 2011: the company said the feature would be built into the following year’s CINEMA 3D Smart TVs. WiDi let a compatible Intel-based laptop send its screen to the TV over a direct wireless connection. It was not the same technology as the wireless HDMI-style connection used by LG’s later Zero Connect TVs.
What were LG’s first wireless HDMI TVs?
LG and Intel announced the partnership on December 15, 2011. LG said Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) would be embedded in its CINEMA 3D Smart TVs the following year, describing them as the first TV products with Intel WiDi. The announcement concerned a laptop-to-TV display feature, not a TV with a wireless HDMI input for every kind of source device.
At the time, LG presented WiDi as a way to put notebook content—including online video being viewed on the notebook—on the television. LG executive Seog-ho Ro said the alliance would let CINEMA 3D Smart TV users access more content conveniently.
How did Intel WiDi work with an LG TV?
WiDi established a direct wireless link between the Wi-Fi hardware in a compatible laptop and the TV. The laptop supplied the content and the TV displayed the laptop’s screen; depending on the laptop and software, users could duplicate the display, project to the TV, or extend the desktop.

LG’s 2011 announcement said an active internet connection or Wi-Fi network was not required for the connection between the laptop and TV. That did not mean a laptop could show online content without internet access: the laptop still needed an internet connection to fetch online video, but the local screen-sharing link to the television did not depend on a home Wi-Fi router.
What did an LG TV and laptop need for WiDi?
WiDi was not a universal wireless display feature. LG’s manual required an Intel-based laptop and the specified Intel software and drivers. The manual documented output up to 1080p only under its stated processor, operating-system, driver, and graphics conditions. The maximum should therefore be read as a supported ceiling for qualifying configurations, not a guarantee for every laptop or WiDi connection.

The manual’s exact compatibility requirements depend on the documented system configuration; the feature was tied to the laptop’s Intel hardware and software rather than simply to any device with Wi-Fi. A non-Intel laptop, phone, game console, or HDMI source was not made WiDi-compatible merely by connecting it to a WiDi-equipped television.
How LG’s wireless-TV technology changed
LG’s later use of “wireless TV” refers to a different setup. Rather than sending a laptop’s desktop directly to the TV, a Zero Connect Box accepts HDMI, USB, and other source connections, then transmits audio and video wirelessly from the box to the screen.

Do LG wireless TVs still use Intel WiDi?
The later LG wireless-TV models described by LG use Zero Connect, not Intel WiDi. WiDi is a laptop screen-sharing method; Zero Connect moves the AV signal from devices plugged into an external box to the television screen. The M3, OLED T, M5, and W6 figures above describe those newer systems, not the 2011 CINEMA 3D Smart TVs.

Intel WiDi vs. LG Zero Connect
- Source devices: WiDi was for a compatible Intel-based laptop. Zero Connect takes wired inputs such as HDMI at its external box, so it can serve connected source devices rather than relying on a WiDi-capable laptop.
- What the wireless link carries: WiDi shares a computer display. Zero Connect transmits the AV signal from the box to the screen.
- Signal capability in the cited LG material: LG’s WiDi manual documents up to 1080p under specified system conditions. LG’s later product announcements cite 4K/120Hz for M3 and OLED T, up to 144Hz for M5 in initial US and Korean markets, and up to 165Hz for W6.
- Physical arrangement: WiDi links the laptop directly to the TV. Zero Connect places source connections in a separate box, which must be positioned with the screen’s wireless reception in mind; LG specified up to 10 meters for the 97-inch M3 when the box faces the screen.
Timeline: from WiDi to Zero Connect
- December 15, 2011: LG and Intel announce WiDi integration in the following year’s CINEMA 3D Smart TVs.
- August 3, 2023: LG announces the 97-inch OLED M3, its first wireless OLED TV, with Zero Connect and 4K/120Hz transmission.
- December 19, 2024: LG announces the 77-inch transparent OLED T with wireless 4K/120Hz AV transmission.
- CES 2025: LG describes the M5 as a true wireless OLED TV supporting up to 144Hz, initially in the US and South Korea.
- April 24, 2026: LG announces TÜV Rheinland True Wireless Lossless Vision certification for W6 and MRGB9M; the W6 supports up to 165Hz.
