The phrase also appears in the name of a separate University of Western Australia multisensory-headset research project; it is not the same organization.
What is Sight into Sound?
Sight into Sound is an independent Houston nonprofit whose mission is to “Turn Sight into Sound.” The organization says it has enriched lives since 1967. Its services are intended for people who are blind or visually impaired, people who have difficulty holding books, people with learning differences such as dyslexia or ADHD, and people with cognitive difficulties that make written words hard to comprehend. Radio reading, available around the clock

The service is designed for listening rather than screen-based reading. A client, Arthur C., described being able to share the familiar experience of hearing a morning newspaper over breakfast after 60 years of blindness. That is a personal account, not a guarantee that every program is available at a particular time or through every listening method.
Custom recordings of printed material

This is a human-recorded alternative when a reader needs a particular printed item, rather than a general-purpose tool that automatically reads any page. The organization’s client Nancy D., who said she had been a client since 1977, described listening to books while walking or doing things around the house.
Live audio description at selected events
For selected live theater performances, trained volunteers provide audio description of visual elements such as costumes, set design, and onstage movement. The description starts with the Playbill. Venue personnel issue the patron a headset so the narration can be heard during the performance. This service adds spoken visual context to a live event; it is distinct from a recording of the performance or a device that independently identifies objects. Availability depends on the selected performance and venue. Ed. R., a client and theater patron, said audio description made the experience more meaningful and the performance feel more alive.
How the organization began
Sight into Sound was originally called Taping for the Blind. The organization credits Robert Levy with encouraging the Library of Congress to broaden its Talking Books catalog for blind and print-handicapped readers. In 1967, the Library accepted his proposal to organize volunteers to read and record books. Radio broadcasting began in the late 1970s, and descriptive services were added in 1992. No. “Turning sight into sound” is also part of the title of a University of Western Australia project, “Turning sight into sound: Enabling the visually impaired to see with a multi-sensory headset.” The university record marks the project as finished, with dates of 1 January 2019 to 31 March 2020 and A$18,997 in university funding. The two approaches address access differently. Sight into Sound’s documented services use human readers and describers: scheduled radio programming, on-request recordings, or narration during selected live events. A wearable visual-to-audio device would instead use technology to convey visual information. The available project record establishes that the UWA research project existed and concluded; it does not establish current commercial availability, performance, price, or suitability of a particular device.
What should Texans do if they need accessible reading?
Residents who are print-handicapped can contact Sight into Sound to ask about personalized reading services. The organization describes custom recordings as free to clients, while its radio service and audio description have their own formats and availability. For a theater performance, check with the venue or Sight into Sound about whether audio description is offered for that date and how to obtain the headset; the documented workflow has venue personnel issue it.
