Yes—AI upscaling is coming to the base PlayStation 5. Sony calls the feature Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), and the first named games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both were receiving patches with QSSR as an additional graphics option when Sony announced the feature on October 1, 2026. QSSR is not the same as PS5 Pro’s PSSR, and Sony has not published benchmark results showing how the two compare.

What QSSR does on PS5

QSSR is Sony’s new AI-upscaling tier for the standard PS5. Sony says it uses AI-guided image upscaling to improve detail and image stability, bringing a feature associated with the PS5 Pro to the base console. The announcement describes QSSR as an additional graphics option in supported games, rather than a universal setting available across every PS5 title.

Sony says QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. It identifies two design elements: a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned to maximize performance on PS5. The company did not provide technical model details or hardware-utilization figures in its October 1, 2026 announcement.

Which games support QSSR?

Sony named two initial games. Both were being patched on announcement day to add QSSR as an optional graphics feature on PS5.

Game Support announced What to check
Marvel’s Wolverine Sony named it as an initial QSSR title; a patch offering QSSR as an additional graphics option was being released October 1, 2026. Check the game’s current patch notes and in-game graphics settings for availability.
Ghost of Yōtei Sony named it as an initial QSSR title; a patch offering QSSR as an additional graphics option was being released October 1, 2026. Check the game’s current patch notes and in-game graphics settings for availability.

Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but it has not provided a complete future compatibility list or schedule. Support depends on a game-specific implementation, so the announcement does not mean every PS5 game will gain the option.

QSSR versus PS5 Pro PSSR

QSSR and PSSR are related AI-upscaling technologies, but Sony presents them as distinct tiers for different consoles. QSSR targets the base PS5; Sony says PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro. The company has not said QSSR is technically identical to PSSR or that it delivers the same results.

Measured image or performance comparison Not stated by Sony in the October 1, 2026 announcement Not stated by Sony in the cited February 27, 2026 post

Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling them. Its February 27, 2026 post said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles by that date. That adoption figure applies to PSSR, not QSSR.

What Sony and developers say about image quality

Sony says QSSR provides notable improvements in image detail and stability. Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology, Mike Fitzgerald, said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer, Jasmin Patry, said QSSR resolves fine detail in characters and environments with a level of temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are developers’ descriptions of their own games, not independent measurements across PS5 titles.

Sony’s announcement does not give a percentage improvement, target output resolution, frame-rate gain, or measured performance cost or saving. It also does not include a quantitative QSSR-versus-PSSR comparison. As a result, the available information does not establish whether QSSR changes frame rate or how its image quality compares with PSSR in a particular game.

How to check for QSSR in a supported game

  1. Install the latest game patch. QSSR support is delivered through game updates; check the game’s current patch notes for confirmation.
  2. Open the game’s graphics or display settings. Look for QSSR as an additional graphics option. Sony did not specify a shared menu path, so the label and location may vary by game.
  3. Compare the available modes in that game. If you want to assess trade-offs, check the game’s listed graphics options and reliable game-specific testing for image detail, temporal stability, frame rate, and output resolution. Sony has not published results on those measures for QSSR.
