CVE-2019-19705 was a local DLL-preloading vulnerability in legacy, non-DCH Realtek High Definition Audio drivers. A specially crafted DLL could be loaded beside a vulnerable executable, potentially letting code run with elevated privileges. The practical fix is to install the current audio driver offered for your exact PC or motherboard model—not to replace the audio hardware.
What was the Realtek HD Audio DLL hijacking vulnerability?
Realtek’s January 16, 2020 advisory identifies CVE-2019-19705 in legacy Realtek High Definition Audio driver version 1.0.0.8855. It says a local user could gain privileges by placing a crafted DLL in the same folder as a running executable. The cause involved Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 MFC behavior: a low-level loader intended for resource DLLs also loaded a code section, creating an opportunity for unexpected code execution. SecurityWeek’s account of SafeBreach Labs’ findings describes the Realtek RAVBg64.exe process running with System privileges and attempting to load certain libraries without validating their digital signatures. Under the conditions described, an unsigned DLL could execute in the signed process’s context. Is CVE-2019-19705 dangerous?
It is a privilege-escalation and code-execution flaw, but it is local: an attacker would need a way to run code on the affected computer and meet the conditions for the vulnerable loading behavior. It is not evidence that someone can compromise a PC remotely simply by knowing its audio driver version. The cited sources document the vulnerability and remediation, but do not establish an active campaign, exploitation rate, or number of affected devices.

Which Realtek audio-driver versions were affected?
Realtek’s advisory specifically names legacy, non-DCH version 1.0.0.8855. NHS England Digital’s alert describes affected HD Audio driver packages as those before 8857. Realtek addressed the package issue with version 1.0.0.8856 in December 2019, according to SecurityWeek. These references use different package boundaries; they should not be treated as a universal version rule for every computer. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can use their own numbering and customized packages.

How to update the Realtek driver safely
- Identify the exact device. Find your PC model, or your motherboard model if you built the computer. Use the manufacturer’s official support site for that model.
- Download the current audio driver from the OEM. Choose the package listed for your Windows version and hardware, then follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Realtek says its own downloadable audio drivers are general drivers and may omit system- or motherboard-specific customizations, so it recommends getting the latest driver from the system or motherboard manufacturer. - Install and restart if prompted. Avoid DLL files or driver packages from unverified download sites; use the OEM package and its documented installation process.
- Verify the installation. Check the driver version in Windows Device Manager or the OEM’s audio control panel. Compare it with the version offered for your exact model, since OEM numbering can differ from Realtek’s general package numbers.
- Use your organization’s update process on managed PCs. If your computer is managed by an employer or school, ask IT or use its approved patch-management workflow rather than installing a separate package yourself.
Should you replace your audio hardware?
No. The cited advisories describe a software-driver vulnerability and recommend a driver update. They do not call for replacing a sound card, motherboard, or computer solely because of CVE-2019-19705.
