You can add CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, navigation or a backup camera to many older cars without replacing the vehicle. The practical choices are a portable display, an interface matched to the car’s factory screen, or a replacement head unit. Which one works depends on your exact car and stereo—not just the model name.
Choose the retrofit that fits your car
Start by deciding whether you want to keep the dashboard untouched, retain the factory screen, or replace the stereo. Then verify compatibility against the vehicle’s exact year and factory audio system. A retrofit that fits one trim or radio generation may not fit another.

Use a portable display for the least invasive upgrade
A standalone display is generally the simplest way to add phone-based navigation, calls and streaming without removing the factory stereo. Car and Driver Tech documents its Intellidash family as supporting wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, 12V operation, Bluetooth, a 76–108 MHz FM transmitter, 3.5 mm AUX and a backup-camera input. Choose the cleanest audio path your car supports. AUX or Bluetooth is usually preferable when available; FM transmission is a fallback and may encounter interference. The cited product information does not quantify interference or delay. Mount the screen so it does not block the road view, controls or airbags, and secure its power cable away from the pedals.

Keep the factory screen with a vehicle-specific interface
Interfaces from GTA Car Kits, Beat-Sonic and GROM are designed for supported vehicle platforms. Their documentation describes adding features such as CarPlay, Android Auto or Bluetooth while retaining some factory screens and controls; GROM also describes steering-wheel control and backup-camera retention on supported vehicles. These functions are not universal across all cars or kits. Check the exact compatibility list and installation manual before buying.
Record the vehicle and stereo details
- Make, model, model year and trim.
- Factory radio name or part number, screen type and infotainment generation.
- Whether the car has a factory amplifier or premium audio system.
- Existing backup camera and its connector or display arrangement.
- Available audio inputs, such as AUX, and any steering-wheel controls you want to preserve.

Replace the head unit for a more integrated upgrade
A double-DIN receiver or floating-screen unit can provide a more integrated upgrade when the dashboard opening and vehicle electronics support it. This route may require a dash kit, wiring harness, antenna adapter and steering-wheel-control interface. Confirm whether the car’s amplifier, premium audio system or factory camera needs an additional adapter before choosing a receiver. Head-unit replacement is one of the principal retrofit approaches described by Curio.
Do not assume that a standard receiver will fit because the opening looks like a common size. Check the vehicle-specific fitment, required trim pieces and wiring, and whether the installation preserves functions such as factory controls and camera display.

Add Bluetooth, a backup camera or OBD-II data
Bluetooth audio and hands-free calls
If the stereo has AUX, an AUX/Bluetooth adapter can add wireless audio. A portable display or replacement head unit may also provide Bluetooth. FM transmission is another option when the car has no usable AUX or Bluetooth path, but reception can vary.
Backup camera
Choose a portable display or head unit with a camera input, or a vehicle-specific camera interface. A factory screen does not necessarily accept a generic camera directly. Route the video cable safely and connect the reverse-trigger wire as directed by the product manual; confirm that the display switches to the camera view when the car is in reverse while stationary.

OBD-II information
Hudiy documents OBD-II communication among the capabilities of its infotainment platform. A generic OBD-II reader can expose diagnostic information, but reader compatibility and app support vary. Treat displayed codes as diagnostic clues, not as a definitive diagnosis or repair recommendation.
Phone and display charging
Use a suitable 12V USB-C charger sized for the phone and display. Check whether the vehicle’s 12V outlet remains powered after the ignition is off; equipment left connected to a continuously powered outlet may contribute to battery drain.

Install and test before reassembling the dash
- Document the original setup. Photograph the wiring and identify the radio, amplifier and camera connectors before disconnecting anything.
- Confirm fitment and parts. Match the kit or receiver to the exact vehicle and gather any required dash kit, wiring harness, antenna adapter and steering-wheel-control adapter.
- Bench-test the equipment. Before fully reinstalling trim, check power, audio, phone pairing, microphone, steering-wheel controls and camera operation.
- Route and secure cables. Keep wiring away from pedals, airbags and sharp edges; secure loose cables and avoid putting strain on connectors.
- Test phone connections while parked. For CarPlay, Apple says a supported vehicle or aftermarket system, Siri and current software are required. Wired setups use USB; wireless setups use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. If CarPlay will not activate, Apple advises checking Siri, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, the USB cable and vehicle firmware. Consult Apple’s CarPlay setup instructions and CarPlay troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the camera and original controls. In a safe stationary location, verify reverse-camera switching and confirm that retained factory controls still work.
- Reassemble only after testing. Put the trim back once each intended function has passed a parked test.
Account for safety and everyday trade-offs
- Place any display within a sensible sightline without obstructing the driver’s view, airbags or controls. Set navigation and playlists before driving.
- Portable screens avoid dash removal but are less integrated. Factory-screen interfaces can preserve the original appearance but demand precise fitment. Head-unit replacement offers a direct upgrade when compatible, with more disassembly and adapter checks.
- Wireless connections add another radio link and can introduce latency; wired USB or AUX may be more stable where supported. The available product descriptions do not establish a universal performance difference.
