Well Dweller is a single-player Metroidvania about a tiny bird exploring a decaying fairy-tale kingdom. Kyle Thompson led its art, code and design, but “made by just one person” needs a qualification: his brother Eric composed the music. The result combines ability-driven exploration, platforming and combat with a deliberately stark contrast between storybook charm and a morbid setting.
What kind of game is Well Dweller?
You play as Glimmer, a small bird armed with a matchstick, who journeys through a ruined kingdom to rescue family members captured under a wicked queen. The game is a single-player, dark-fairy-tale Metroidvania: exploration, platforming, combat, puzzles and secrets all feed into finding new routes through an interconnected world.
New abilities do more than unlock doors or clear ability gates. Thompson says he designed them to change how Glimmer moves, so exploring familiar areas can feel different as the character’s options expand. Trinkets let players upgrade and mix abilities, while bosses, characters to befriend and illustrated woodcut storybook pages add other reasons to look beyond the main path.
A cute protagonist in a morbid fairy tale
The visual and narrative contrast is intentional. Thompson has cited classic fairy tales, Blasphemous and the graphic novel Beautiful Darkness as inspirations for a world that pairs playful or cute elements with darker material. He chose a bird protagonist after considering a rabbit, saying the bird offered more interesting movement possibilities.

Who made Well Dweller?
Kyle Thompson is the game’s developer and led its art, programming and design. In a September 17, 2026 interview with 80 Level, he put the division of work plainly: “I make all the art, code, design, etc., and he makes all the music.” The “he” is Thompson’s brother Eric, who has composed music for Thompson’s games since Sheepo.
So Well Dweller is best described as solo-led, not as a game with no collaborators. Thompson’s earlier games include Islets and Crypt Custodian. He says Well Dweller was made in GameMaker, with Spine for animation and Photoshop for art.

Why the design took iteration
Thompson describes gameplay design as the hardest part because mechanics have to work together. He said the game was playable nearly to the end about halfway through its development timeline, leaving the remaining time for refinement. One example was the matchstick: its original damage-triggered extinguishing behavior felt lopsided, so he reworked it late in development. As he told 80 Level, “But it just takes lots of playtesting and tons of rounds of revisions to get everything right.”
He also says the design builds on lessons from Crypt Custodian: making the world more interconnected and giving characters purposes and backstories. Those are the developer’s stated aims, rather than an independent assessment of how successfully the finished game achieves them.
