Micron’s reported forecast is that memory demand will exceed supply in calendar 2027 and 2028, with industry conditions tighter than in 2026. That points to continued pressure on DRAM, the memory used as RAM in PCs and other devices, but it does not establish what consumer RAM prices or local retail stock will be.
What Micron reportedly expects in 2027 and 2028
Tom’s Hardware reported on October 1, 2026, that Micron CEO and chair Sanjay Mehrotra said: “In calendar 2027 as well as 2028, we see demand exceeding supply. In fact, we see greater tightness in the industry in 2027 and in 2028 versus 2026. Overall, supply-demand environment is only getting tighter.” The quotation is reported from Micron’s FY2026 Q4 earnings call; an official Q4 transcript or prepared remarks was not available in the sources cited here. The report also says Micron expects industry shipments of NAND and DRAM to grow in the low-to-mid 20% range over the next two years, while supply remains constrained. A transcript reproduction from Earnings Whispers similarly describes industry bit shipments growing in the low 20% range in calendar 2027 and 2028. These are forecasts for shipment growth, not a claim that production will fully satisfy demand. Earnings Whispers transcript reproduction
Does this mean there will be a RAM shortage?
It means Micron expects a tight industry balance for memory, including DRAM, which is the relevant category for system RAM. It does not prove that every RAM type, capacity, device segment or region will have the same availability. The reported outlook also covers NAND, which is flash storage rather than RAM; the two should not be treated as interchangeable.

Nor does an industry-level supply-demand forecast tell consumers whether a particular DDR5 kit will be hard to find, or how much it will cost at a given retailer. Those outcomes depend on product, market and timing, none of which the reported forecast quantifies.
Why does Micron expect supply to remain constrained?
Micron’s official FY2026 Q3 prepared remarks offer context, though they are not the exact Q4 forecast. The company said it expected industry supply to improve gradually in 2028 but did not have “line of sight as to when memory supply will be able to catch up with increasing demand.” Micron cited long fab construction lead times, shortages of workers with critical trade skills, regulation and permitting, and energy infrastructure as constraints. Micron FY2026 Q3 prepared remarks
Micron also pointed to AI data-center growth and AI features in smartphones, high-end PCs and other devices as demand trends, alongside rising demand for higher-performance memory and limited cleanroom space. These are the company’s explanations; the available figures do not break down how much each factor contributes to the projected 2027–2028 gap.
Will memory prices go up?
The forecast alone cannot establish a consumer price increase, its size, or when it would reach a particular RAM kit. Tighter supply can put pressure on the market, but the Q4 reporting cited here does not provide a retail price forecast. It also does not establish that consumers should buy immediately.

Micron’s reported comparison is specifically about calendar years: it expects greater industry tightness in 2027 and 2028 than in 2026. Its Q3 remarks described supply improving gradually in 2028, while warning that the company could not see when supply would catch up with demand. Gradual improvement and a continuing shortfall can occur at the same time: more bits may ship while demand still grows faster.
Because the precise Q4 wording and shipment estimate are reported by secondary sources rather than an official Q4 transcript available here, treat them as Micron’s reported outlook, not a verified transcript quotation. The available statements describe an industry forecast, not a guaranteed outcome for each memory product or market.
