Google Pixel phones can measure body temperature without touching your forehead, but the feature is limited to supported Pro models and is intended for adults under specific conditions. Google introduced body-temperature readings for the Pixel 8 Pro in January 2024; its current object-temperature support list also includes newer Pro models, but that does not mean every model supports body-temperature measurement.
Which Pixel phones can check body temperature?
Google introduced body-temperature mode in the Thermometer app for the Pixel 8 Pro with its January 25, 2024 Pixel Feature Drop. Google said the body-temperature feature was initially available only in the United States and had received FDA marketing authorization. The phone’s rear infrared sensor, located beside the camera, works with an on-device algorithm to estimate temperature during a forehead-to-temple sweep. Google’s engineering explanation describes this as the first smartphone app granted FDA authorization for body-temperature measurement.
Do not confuse body-temperature eligibility with object-temperature support. Google’s current Thermometer app support instructions list Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL for measuring objects. That object list does not establish that those same models have FDA-authorized body-temperature measurement. Body-temperature availability also depends on compatible software, region, and regulatory availability.
How to take your temperature with a Pixel
- Open the Thermometer app and choose the body-temperature option, if it is available on your phone.
- Identify the infrared sensor beside the rear camera. Remove anything covering your forehead or temple, such as hair or a hat.
- Hold the sensor close to the center of your forehead without letting the phone touch your skin.
- Follow the app’s visual, audible, and haptic guidance to sweep from the forehead toward the temple. Complete the sweep within four seconds.
- Read the result shown in the app. If Fitbit is installed, the app can save readings to a Fitbit profile.
Google’s procedure is contactless; it does not involve placing the phone against the forehead. For the FDA-reviewed workflow and labeling, see the FDA De Novo decision summary.

Body temperature and object temperature are different modes
The phone’s infrared sensor can also estimate the temperature of objects. For object readings, Google instructs users to hold the phone about 2 inches (5 cm) from the object without touching it. Results can vary with the material’s emissivity, the object’s size, the temperature difference between the sensor and object, and the distance from the object. Object mode is not a substitute for the body-temperature workflow or a medical thermometer.
How accurate is the Pixel body-temperature reading?
Google says its algorithm measured temperatures from 96.9°F to 104°F (36.1°C to 40°C) to within ±0.3°C compared with an FDA-cleared temporal artery thermometer in clinical trials. The FDA De Novo summary reports 145 enrolled subjects and 144 completers, with overall clinical bias of +0.04°C and a stated device accuracy range of 36°C to 40°C. These are results from the regulatory submission, not a guarantee that every reading or user will achieve the same performance. The FDA summary also records bench testing against ISO 80601-2-56:2017 and usability testing with 31 participants.

The FDA describes the output as an approximation of rectal temperature. Accuracy figures apply to the stated range and study comparison; they should not be read as evidence that the phone diagnoses fever or identifies an illness.
Who should not use the feature, and when?
The FDA labeling describes Body Temperature Software as an over-the-counter mobile medical application intended for people over 18, excluding premature infants. It cannot detect illnesses and is not a substitute for advice from a healthcare provider. Do not use it in these circumstances:
- During excessive motion.
- In direct sunlight or near radiant heat.
- When the ambient environment is below 15°C (59°F) or above 35°C (95°F).
- If the phone is visibly damaged or its sensors are obstructed.
- When hypothermia is suspected.
If the phone, region, environment, or medical-use situation falls outside those conditions, use a suitable dedicated thermometer and contact a healthcare professional when needed.

No. It provides a temperature estimate, not a diagnosis. The FDA labeling says the app cannot detect illnesses, and neither the FDA nor Google describes the measurement as a fever or disease diagnosis.
