In July 2020, a report linked seven VPN brands advertising no-log or zero-logging privacy to an unsecured, internet-facing Elasticsearch cluster containing identifiable account and connection records. The reporting supports a serious exposure of metadata; it does not establish that every service recorded users’ full browsing histories or exposed the contents of encrypted sessions.

Which VPN providers were linked to the exposure?

A July 2020 report associated records in one exposed Elasticsearch cluster with these seven Hong Kong-based VPN services:

VPN brand Connection to the incident
UFO VPN Named in the report as associated with records in the exposed cluster
FAST VPN Named in the report as associated with records in the exposed cluster
Free VPN Named in the report as associated with records in the exposed cluster
Super VPN Named in the report as associated with records in the exposed cluster
Flash VPN Named in the report as associated with records in the exposed cluster
Secure VPN Named in the report as associated with records in the exposed cluster
Rabbit VPN Named in the report as associated with records in the exposed cluster

The report said the services appeared to share a common white-label provider. That does not, by itself, establish that every brand had identical systems, policies, or exposure in every respect. The Register’s 2020 account described more than one terabyte of user logs left unprotected and facing the public internet. That is the scale cited in contemporary reporting, not a measure of how many users were affected.

What information was reportedly exposed?

Reported records included account details and operational metadata. The categories below describe the kinds of information reported across the exposed material; they do not establish that every record contained every field.

Reported data category Examples Why it matters
Account and subscription data Email addresses, usernames, account IDs, subscription information Can identify or help target an account holder.
Credential-related data Passwords in some form; session or authentication records Could create account risk, especially if a password was reused. The reporting does not establish the precise format or protection of every password record.
Connection metadata Source IP addresses, VPN-server IP addresses, connection timestamps Can link an account or internet connection to use of a VPN at a particular time. In combination with other records, it may help identify a person or correlate activity.
Device and usage information Device and operating-system details, bandwidth counters Can make records more distinctive or reveal operational patterns.
Diagnostics and API information Diagnostic or API data May contain operational details; the significance depends on the specific fields and records.

These are not merely anonymous performance counters: source IPs, timestamps, account identifiers, and assigned VPN endpoints can be identifying in combination. But metadata is not the same as a readable record of every website visited or the contents of an encrypted connection.

Does this prove the VPNs logged browsing histories or exposed HTTPS traffic?

No. The available evidence supports the claim that identifiable operational records were retained and exposed. It does not establish that every named service stored a complete history of websites users visited, or that readable contents of HTTPS-encrypted sessions were present in the cluster.

A VPN can avoid recording browsing content and still retain connection, authentication, diagnostic, or account metadata. HTTPS encryption also protects session contents in transit between a user and a website; the reported exposure does not demonstrate that this encryption was defeated. The incident therefore raises a concrete question about the meaning of “zero logging,” rather than proving that all VPN activity was visible.

What did “zero logging” mean in this case?

The central problem is the breadth of the marketing claim. “We do not log browsing content” is narrower than “we retain no identifiable connection records.” If a service stores source IP addresses, timestamps, device identifiers, account information, or server assignments, a broad promise of zero logging can give consumers a misleading impression even when packet contents are unavailable.

To evaluate a VPN’s claim, look for a policy that distinguishes among browsing activity, DNS requests, connection timestamps, source IP addresses, device telemetry, payment records, and support data. Check how long each category is retained, how deletion works, and whether the policy clearly explains what is collected for operating and securing the service.

What should a user of one of these services do?

If you used an affected service, take account-protection steps now. The 2020 reporting does not establish whether a particular user’s record was present, so treat the exposure as a reason to reduce avoidable credential and phishing risks rather than proof that your account was accessed.

  2. Change any reused password elsewhere. Prioritize accounts that shared the VPN password, especially email and payment accounts.
  3. Enable multifactor authentication where the VPN or related account offers it.
  4. Revoke old sessions or sign out other devices if the service provides that option.
  5. Watch payment activity for unfamiliar charges, and be alert for targeted phishing messages that use your email address or refer to VPN use.

How should you assess a replacement VPN?

Do not rank a service solely by the phrase “no logs.” Compare the specific data it says it collects with the controls and evidence supporting that claim.

  • Retention detail: Check separate disclosures for browsing content, DNS requests, connection timestamps, source IPs, device telemetry, billing, and support records; look for stated retention periods and deletion procedures.
  • Independent audits: Check the audit date, what systems and claims were in scope, and whether the findings are publicly available. An audit is evidence about its stated scope and time, not a guarantee against future incidents.
  • Ownership and infrastructure: Look for transparent ownership and whether multiple brands share infrastructure or operational providers.
  • Technical controls: Review whether the provider describes RAM-only or diskless servers, access controls, and systems designed to minimize logging. These measures can reduce some risks but do not replace clear retention policies.
  • Incident handling: Look for a clear account of how the company reports incidents, notifies customers, and explains its forensic findings.
  • Jurisdiction: Consider where the provider operates and what legal obligations apply, but do not treat location alone as proof of privacy or security.

The July 2020 incident is a reminder to judge a VPN by the records it actually retains and how it protects them—not by an absolute-sounding label alone.
