It is not a geological replica: Artinian says he wanted an image that felt grounded in reality but fantastical. His process combined reference gathering, blockout, a small set of reusable meshes, sculpting, material work and deliberate composition.
What is the real monument behind the artwork?
The reference is the Symphony of Stones, also known as the Basalt Organ, in the Azat River gorge in Armenia’s Kotayk Province. The Republic of Armenia Ministry of Economy’s site-management plan places it on the river’s right bank, about 1 km northeast of Garni village, at elevations between 1,270 and 1,375 m. The plan describes a protected core area of 0.9499 hectares with a 550 m boundary. Read the site-management plan.
The natural formation and Artinian’s scene should be kept distinct. The actual site is a geological monument; the golden sun emblem and flame gate in Sonata of the Stones are elements of his fantasy interpretation, not features of the gorge.
How were the Garni basalt columns formed?
A 2017 geological-sciences proceedings volume identifies the exposed flow near Garni as columnar trachybasaltic andesite lava and dates it to 127 ka. It relates the polygonal prisms to slow cooling and cracking. The age belongs to that published geological account, rather than being a general age for every rock or feature in the wider area. The Ministry of Economy’s site plan describes the monument’s columns as symmetric hexagonal-pentahedral columnar basalt formed in the Quaternary, with columns reaching up to 50 m. That is a maximum reported by the plan, not a height that applies to every visible column. The two sources use different geological descriptions and should not be collapsed into a single claim.
How did Artur Artinian build the 3D environment?
Artinian says the project drew on a visit to the monument, a childhood memory of seeing it, and photographs from the Garni region and other basalt formations. In an interview with 80 Level, he describes a workflow that starts with broad forms and moves toward controlled detail.

Blockout and massing
He began with simple blockout shapes to judge the silhouette and how the pillars interacted. Rather than build every stone as a unique asset, he made variations from a pillar mesh, including a single pillar and groups of three or four at different scales. He then hand-placed assets to art-direct the scene’s overall massing.
Sculpting and surface detail
Artinian sculpted a six-sided pillar, varying the surface on each face so that rotation could produce visual differences. For smaller objects such as candles, he describes sculpting in ZBrush, decimating the result to a low-poly mesh, and baking high-poly detail onto it. He says the basalt columns followed the same general high-to-low detail approach.

He made a tileable stone material in Substance 3D Designer, then used an RGB mask made in Substance 3D Painter to control edge wear, dirt and other surface variation. The interview also tags Unreal Engine, Marmoset Toolbag and Maya alongside those tools, but does not assign each one a specific role in the process.
Composition and mood
A low camera position and low focal length helped Artinian sell the scale of the structure. He also used an asymmetrical split in the massing to balance the image and draw attention toward the golden sun emblem and flame gate. These choices serve the artwork’s dramatic composition rather than documenting the natural monument.

Why reuse a small number of meshes?
Artinian describes working with roughly five unique meshes and deliberately reusing them. Changes in scale, rotation, placement, lighting and set dressing helped create variety from a limited asset set. The practical lesson is not that reuse automatically creates realism: it is that careful control of silhouette, orientation and surface variation can keep repeated assets from reading as identical.

What is the monument’s heritage status?
The Ministry of Economy’s site-management plan says ministerial decree N 274-N approved the passports for the Symphony of Stones and Anonymous Cave on 18 August 2017. It describes the site as a natural geological monument protected under Armenian law and identifies Garni community and the Khosrov Forest State Reserve’s non-commercial organization among the participants in its protection.
The combined entry “The Archaeological Complex of Garni and the ‘Basalt Organ’ Columnar Joint” appears on UNESCO’s Tentative List, with a submission date of 10 March 2025. Tentative-list status is not the same as inscription on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. View the UNESCO entry.
What should visitors know about the setting?
The management plan describes visitor movement as mainly organized along the renovated road and identifies nearby Garni cultural sites, geological formations, Anonymous Cave and Khosrov Forest State Reserve as part of the wider setting. A travel guide updated 3 August 2026 estimates a 35-minute downhill walk from Garni village and notes that the return is uphill; its access details and charges can change, so check current local information before travelling.
