What did Chris Hansen say about Robert Pattinson’s portrayal?
After watching Primetime, Hansen said the film felt “so bizarre and so in-and-out of reality” and that he was “not sure what the point of it was.” He objected both to Pattinson’s characterization of him and to the movie’s depiction of the events around To Catch a Predator. Variety reported his reaction on September 28, 2026, based on a video he posted to his Have A Seat With Chris Hansen channel.
Asked whether he saw scenes he knew had not happened, Hansen answered “almost every one of them.” He also said he did not like anything in the film and called it a hit piece on him and the series. Those are Hansen’s characterizations; they do not establish the filmmakers’ intent or independently verify how closely each scene follows history.
What is Primetime about?
The film stars Pattinson as Hansen in 2006, when To Catch a Predator was moving from its place on Dateline NBC toward a primetime block. The series had begun as a Dateline NBC segment in 2004, according to Vanity Fair. It followed online decoys and sting operations targeting men alleged to have sought sex with children they met online. An on-camera confrontation is not, by itself, proof of a criminal conviction.

Is Primetime a true story or a biopic?
A24 bills Primetime as “inspired by true events.” Vanity Fair describes it as a surreal, fictionalized “media collage,” rather than a conventional biopic or documentary. That framing matters: the film draws on real people and a real television series, but the label does not promise a literal reconstruction of every event.
That distinction does not settle Hansen’s complaint. His view is that the film distorts both his personality and the show’s history; the available reporting establishes his reaction, not a definitive verdict on the accuracy of each scene.
Rank #2
Did Hansen see the finished film?
Yes. The criticism reported by Variety followed his viewing of the completed movie. Hansen had earlier declined an opportunity for an early screening after a dispute over a legal agreement, according to Variety’s account of the episode; that earlier disagreement did not prevent him from later watching the finished film.

Hansen said the film upset current and former colleagues. He also reported that some former crew members thought the filmmaking was good but became bored after about 30 minutes. These comments represent Hansen’s account of other people’s reactions, not the results of an independently surveyed group.
