Mondra uses Microsoft Azure to process food-product and ingredient data at scale, calculate lifecycle impacts, and let clients explore ways to reduce them. Its platform combines Azure SQL Database Hyperscale with product data, lifecycle assessment workflows, digital twins, and Sherpa, a natural-language assistant built with Azure OpenAI Service. The aim is to make product-level environmental information more accessible and actionable for retailers and suppliers—not to make cloud computing itself a substitute for emissions reductions.

What Mondra does with food-supply-chain data

Mondra Global Limited is a UK food-supply-chain intelligence company. Its platform brings together product specifications, ingredient information, and lifecycle studies to help retailers and suppliers examine impacts such as carbon, water, biodiversity, land use, resilience, and compliance.

That information can help users identify where impacts arise and evaluate possible changes to ingredients, sourcing, or formulations. Microsoft’s 2025 customer story says Mondra monitors more than 60,000 products and more than 1 million ingredients. Those are figures reported by Microsoft, not independently validated measurements in the sources available here.

How Azure supports the calculations

Microsoft says Mondra moved its high-volume data estate to Azure SQL Database Hyperscale. The database supports the storage and processing of large volumes of product and supply-chain information. Mondra says rapid processing matters when new data must be pushed through the platform without slowing the experience for users; Microsoft quotes Chief Technology Officer Marco De Sanctis describing Hyperscale as the tier that enabled large data pushes without affecting that experience.

Mondra’s workflow is intended to apply its data-engineering and lifecycle-assessment methods across an assortment of products, rather than treating every product as an isolated manual study. Microsoft’s 2025 story reports that an assessment turnaround that could take several weeks or months was reduced to about four hours. That is a case-study result reported by Microsoft; the story does not establish that every assessment takes four hours or specify that the figure applies to every product, client, or data condition.

Once product and ingredient data are available, digital twins can be used to explore scenarios—for example, changing an ingredient or supplier and examining potential environmental consequences before a business makes a real-world change. Product- and supplier-level information can then inform Scope 3 reduction planning and collaboration. The platform supports analysis and decision-making; it does not itself guarantee that a modeled change will be adopted or deliver the projected reduction.

What Sherpa does—and what it does not do

Sherpa is Mondra’s AI assistant for asking questions about information held in its system using ordinary language. Microsoft says it was developed with Azure OpenAI Service, Semantic Kernel, and vector support in Azure SQL Database. An example question is, “Which of my products has the highest carbon footprint?” This is meant to make environmental data easier for people without specialist sustainability expertise to query.

Mondra Chief Product Officer Tom Holden told Microsoft that users could ask questions in their own language and get an answer. Sherpa is therefore an access layer for Mondra’s underlying data and analytics, rather than a replacement for lifecycle assessment. The usefulness of an answer depends on the data available and on how the system interprets a question; a natural-language response alone is not evidence that a footprint or reduction estimate has been independently verified.

What results has Mondra reported?

Microsoft’s 2025 customer story reports that one lasagna reformulation reduced production carbon emissions by 18%. It is a specific reported example, not a general result for all reformulations or a guarantee of future savings. The same story reports the platform’s product and ingredient coverage and the assessment turnaround described above. These outcomes are vendor or Microsoft case-study claims; the cited material does not provide independent peer-reviewed validation of every figure.

Microsoft’s October 2024 Sherpa launch article separately reported that Mondra served 85% of the UK grocery retail market. That is a market-coverage claim attributed to Microsoft and dated to that article; it should not be read as a current independently audited market share.

How Mondra’s partnerships fit into the picture

Mondra lists partners including Zero Carbon Company, Trace One, Foods Connected, HESTIA, Kynetec, Manufacture 2030, Microsoft, and Oracle. The described partnerships show how Mondra’s environmental analytics may sit alongside planning, product, and supplier workflows; the descriptions below are Mondra’s own characterizations.

Partner Described role alongside Mondra
Zero Carbon Company A templated retailer roadmap covering Scope 1, 2, and 3 disclosures, SBTi-aligned commitments, performance monitoring, and supplier action plans.
Trace One Product lifecycle management integration that brings carbon-footprint and lifecycle insights into food and beverage product workflows.
Foods Connected Supplier collaboration, traceability, procurement, quality, and sustainability data combined with Mondra’s carbon, resilience, and compliance analytics.

These integrations address different needs: a company assessing options should check product-footprint and lifecycle-assessment depth, supplier and traceability data, enterprise or product-lifecycle integrations, scenario modeling, Scope 3 planning support, and the provider’s food-sector and geographic coverage. A partner listing alone does not establish that every integration is available to every customer or included in every plan.
