Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1803 (KB 5083824), released to the Canary Channel on April 3, 2026, adds a pen tail-button option that mirrors the app assigned to the Copilot key and improves reliability when setting up fluid dictation in Voice Typing. Both changes are experimental Insider features, not a promise of an imminent general Windows release.
What changed in Build 28020.1803?
The Canary flight focuses on two input settings rather than a broad redesign: pen-button assignment and Voice Typing configuration. Microsoft’s April 3 announcement identifies the build as Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1803 (KB 5083824).
Assign the pen tail button to the Copilot-key app
Microsoft refined the Pen settings page and added a “Same as Copilot key” option. Selecting it lets the pen’s tail button launch the same app assigned to the Copilot key. It synchronizes the button’s app assignment; the announcement does not describe a new pen gesture or a change to what the Copilot key itself does.
If you are choosing a physical pen, such as a Microsoft Surface Pen, confirm that your device and specific pen generation are compatible before buying. Microsoft’s announcement does not give a universal list of supported pen models.

More reliable fluid-dictation setup
The build improves reliability when configuring the fluid dictation option in Voice Typing, which opens with Windows key + H. Microsoft describes this as a configuration reliability improvement; it does not claim a new dictation feature or specify a changed dictation experience once the option is configured.
Why might fluid dictation still be missing or unreliable?
The announcement establishes that setup reliability is being improved, but does not say that every Insider will immediately see the option or that all configuration problems are resolved. Microsoft distributes features through Controlled Feature Rollout to subsets of Insiders, so availability can vary. A missing option alone does not establish that the build installed incorrectly.

Is Build 28020.1803 suitable for an everyday PC?
This is a Canary Channel preview build, intended for testing rather than a guaranteed stable release. Microsoft warns that Canary builds can be unstable, and says preview features can change, be removed, or never ship outside Windows Insider builds. Use it only if you are comfortable running experimental Windows software and potentially encountering instability.

The pen assignment and Voice Typing improvement are the changes highlighted here. They do not establish that the same features are available to all Canary users, work with every pen, or will appear in a public Windows release. Microsoft also recorded improved fluid-dictation configuration reliability in its March 20, 2026 Beta Channel announcement; that is a separate build and does not make the Canary flight a stable release.
