Yes, conditionally. Viasat satellite internet can bring a connection to rural and remote homes beyond cable or fiber footprints, but coverage alone does not close the digital divide. A household also needs a service it can afford, enough data for daily use, feasible installation, and performance suited to its work, school, and communication needs. Exede is a legacy Viasat brand; Viasat’s consumer materials cited here use Viasat plan branding instead.
What was Exede, and what does the name mean now?
Exede was Viasat’s consumer broadband brand built around the ViaSat-1 satellite. In a 2018 investor filing, Viasat described Exede as a service for unserved and underserved U.S. consumers and cited an FCC estimate of approximately 19 million people without broadband at that time. That figure is historical, not a current count.
Viasat’s consumer materials cited here use Viasat plan branding. The available information does not establish that Exede remains a retail plan name in 2026, so people looking for service should check Viasat’s current offerings rather than assume an Exede plan is still sold.
Where can satellite internet help when cable or fiber is unavailable?
Satellite can serve locations where building terrestrial networks is difficult or uneconomical, including some rural and remote areas. The FCC’s 2024 report identifies Viasat, Hughes/EchoStar, and SpaceX/Starlink as satellite providers that can help close the U.S. connectivity gap. It notes that Viasat, SES, and Telesat use geostationary high-throughput satellites over North America.

- ⚠️ CABLE INTERNET ONLY - NOT COMPATIBLE WITH: Fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, Satellite, or Fixed Wireless. ONLY works with cable providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox. Verify your internet type BEFORE purchase.
- 🚫 NO WiFi INCLUDED - ROUTER REQUIRED: This is a modem ONLY. You MUST buy a separate WiFi router to get wireless internet. Without a router, only ONE device can connect via Ethernet cable. This does NOT replace your current WiFi router.
- 🔌 CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
- 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
- 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.
That makes satellite an important option where a wired provider does not reach, but it does not mean every address can get every plan, or that advertised service will be suitable for every household. Check availability and installation feasibility at the exact address. A map or provider footprint is a starting point, not a guarantee of service at a particular home.
How much does Viasat cost, and does it have data limits?
Prices and plan terms depend on the offering and location. The available plan figures are dated examples, not a current quote:
| Plan example | Published terms | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Viasat Unleashed | Up to 150 Mbps in select markets, according to Viasat in an October 23, 2024 digital-inclusion article. | “Up to” is an advertised maximum, not a speed guarantee for every address; the source describes availability in select markets. |
| CAF II Connection 25 | Up to 25 Mbps download, 3 Mbps upload, and 600 GB of high-speed data; Viasat stated a starting price of $89.99 per month in its 2023 announcement. | A dated program plan example, not a universal or current retail price. The source does not establish present availability or terms. |
These examples show why it is important to ask what “data” means on the specific plan. The 2023 Connection 25 announcement specified 600 GB of high-speed data, but the information available here does not establish current data allowances, what happens after an allowance is used, or whether a present-day plan has a hard cap, reduced speeds, or other limits. Confirm the current plan’s allowance and congestion or throttling rules in writing before ordering.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Compare the full monthly cost, equipment charges, installation fees, and any required contract or other recurring charges—not only the advertised starting price. Viasat’s 2024 article says its company participated in the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and worked with Connect America Fund Phase II to provide discounted satellite internet and phone service in qualifying areas. The same article states ACP funding ended in May 2024. Do not assume ACP or a successor subsidy will lower a current bill; check whether any assistance program is active, whether it applies at the address, and whether the household qualifies.

Is satellite internet suitable for work, school, and video calls?
It may be adequate for many everyday online tasks, but the plan’s advertised download speed is only one part of the decision. Upload performance, data terms, congestion, and latency affect whether a connection works well for a particular household. The available sources do not provide a current Exede latency measurement, so there is no sound basis here for assigning it a specific latency figure.
Before choosing a plan, consider how the household actually uses the connection:

- VPNs, interactive applications, and online gaming: Ask the provider or service administrator about compatibility and latency sensitivity. A download-speed figure alone cannot answer whether the connection will feel responsive.
- Multiple users or a community institution: Consider simultaneous use and peak-hour capacity, not just a single device’s best-case speed.
Where connectivity is essential for work, school, or health care, confirm support expectations and repair procedures as well as performance. The sources cited here do not establish Viasat’s current repair times or service quality at any particular address.
How does Viasat compare with fiber, cable, fixed wireless, cellular, and Starlink?
There is no universal winner: the best option depends on what can actually be installed at the location and the household’s needs. The FCC’s 2024 discussion places Viasat among satellite providers, while the comparison below is a decision framework rather than a ranking or a set of current provider-specific performance claims.
| Option | What to establish at the address | Key trade-off to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber | Whether service reaches the property and what installation will require. | Compare the available plan’s price, upload and download performance, fees, and installation timing with alternatives. |
| Cable | Whether the local cable network serves the address and which plans are offered there. | Compare total cost, upload performance, data terms, and performance at the times the household needs it. |
| Fixed wireless | Whether a provider can deliver service to the property and whether installation is feasible. | Check address-level availability, plan limits, capacity, and performance; do not infer serviceability just from nearby coverage. |
| Cellular home internet | Whether the provider offers home service at the location and what signal and equipment are needed. | Review the specific plan’s cost, data policy, and performance rather than assuming a phone signal guarantees a suitable home connection. |
| Geostationary satellite, including Viasat | Whether the provider serves the address, can install the equipment, and offers an appropriate plan. | Evaluate total cost, data terms, latency-sensitive uses, weather resilience, congestion, and repair expectations. |
| Low-Earth-orbit satellite, including Starlink | Whether service and equipment are available at the address and installation is possible. | Compare actual plan terms, cost, capacity, and suitability for the household; the cited sources do not establish a like-for-like current comparison with Viasat. |
For communities and policymakers, the question is also about long-term capacity. Where fiber or fixed wireless is feasible, compare its cost and scalability with satellite options rather than treating satellite coverage as a substitute for every terrestrial investment. Satellite may be the practical way to reach a location that terrestrial construction would not serve, while a different technology may better meet the needs of a denser area or institution.

Why does coverage not automatically mean digital inclusion?
Availability is only one part of the divide. Affordability, adoption, and service quality matter too: a satellite footprint does not help a household that cannot pay for the monthly plan, equipment, installation, or enough data for its needs.
In 2023, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported that nearly a third of Americans without broadband cited cost as the reason. GAO also reported that more than 14 million households were enrolled in ACP by September 2022—about one-third of estimated eligible households. These figures help explain why adding coverage does not by itself ensure that people can subscribe and use the connection.
Public programs and coverage maps also require careful interpretation. GAO counted more than 133 federal broadband-related funding programs administered by 15 agencies in 2023 and called for a coordinated national strategy. In a 2025 review, GAO found that agencies rely on the FCC National Broadband Map while FCC validation and documentation processes remained incomplete; the review also said millions still lacked service despite substantial public investment. For tribal and remote communities in particular, a map indication should not replace address-level confirmation or consultation with the community about its needs.

What should you verify before choosing satellite service?
- Check service at the exact address. Ask which current Viasat plan is actually offered there, whether installation is possible, and what equipment or site requirements apply.
- Get the complete price and terms. Confirm recurring charges, equipment and installation costs, any other fees, and what happens to service or billing if you cancel.
- Ask how the data policy works. Get the current allowance, if any, and a clear explanation of what happens after it is reached, including whether speeds are reduced or traffic is managed.
- Match the connection to important uses. For calls, VPNs, telehealth, or other latency-sensitive tasks, ask about latency and upload performance, and determine whether a trial period is available.
- Compare feasible alternatives. Request address-specific offers from fiber, cable, fixed wireless, cellular, and other satellite providers; compare installation feasibility and total cost, not just headline speeds.
- Check assistance separately. Verify whether a current subsidy or local assistance program exists and whether the household and plan qualify. Do not rely on ACP’s former availability as proof of a current discount.
