Two 17-year-old boys have each been sentenced to 10 years in prison for an arson attack at Indian Aroma restaurant in Gants Hill, east London. A jury convicted them of arson with intent to endanger life and possessing an offensive weapon after a seven-week trial at the Old Bailey. They cannot be named because they were under 18.
What happened at the Gants Hill restaurant?
The attack took place on Friday, 22 August 2025, at Indian Aroma, a busy Indian restaurant in Gants Hill, Ilford. The Metropolitan Police said a group entered carrying machetes, poured petrol across the floor, furniture and people, and lit a taper, triggering a fireball. Two people suffered critical burn injuries and several others suffered severe injuries, according to the police account.
A September 2025 police update said six people—three women and three men—had been injured, and that two remained in hospital with life-changing injuries at that time. These descriptions come from different updates and refer to the victims’ reported condition at those respective points.
What were the teenagers convicted of, and what sentence did they receive?
Following a seven-week trial at the Old Bailey, both boys were convicted of arson with intent to endanger life and possession of an offensive weapon. The Standard reported that on 2 October 2026 Judge Grieve sentenced each to 10 years in prison.

The police said the boys could not be named because of their ages. The September 2025 police update described attempted murder among the charges at that earlier stage of the case; that was not one of the final convictions announced after trial.
How did police investigate the attack?
The Metropolitan Police said investigators traced the suspects’ movements using CCTV, traffic cameras and automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) records. According to the police, a stolen Toyota Prius travelled from south London to Barkingside and Gants Hill. Officers later found the car and recovered a petrol-canister spout and mobile phones.

Police also said they recovered clothing, including trainers and a balaclava, that matched images from CCTV. These are details of the investigation as described by the Met; they are not an independent examination of the evidence.

The police account said the motive remained unclear. In its sentencing report, The Standard quoted Judge Grieve as saying: “I have no doubt that you were carrying out this operation on the direction of some older and more experienced criminal who has not been identified… but you did so with cold blood.” That was the judge’s assessment as reported by the newspaper; the sources do not identify the person he described or establish a motive.

Detective Inspector Emma Sharp, who led the investigation, said the group tried to “outmanoeuvre the police and avoid the consequences of their pre-mediated violence,” adding that the outcome showed detectives could unravel complex incidents and secure justice. That was the investigator’s characterization of the case.
