Yes. Windows 11 includes a Gamepad keyboard layout that lets you enter text using an Xbox controller. Update Windows, then bring up the on-screen keyboard by long-pressing the Xbox button, or enable controller input in Settings. Availability and exact behavior depend on your Windows build, device, and market.
What the Windows 11 Gamepad keyboard does
The Gamepad layout adapts the on-screen keyboard for controller navigation. Use the stick and controller buttons to select letters, numbers, Space, Backspace, and other keys. It is intended for situations where reaching a physical keyboard or mouse is inconvenient, such as using a living-room PC from the couch or entering text on a handheld PC.
This is a text-entry option, not a claim that a controller is a full replacement for a keyboard in every task. Microsoft has not published a comparative speed or accuracy benchmark for it.
How to open the Xbox controller keyboard
- Update Windows 11. The Gamepad layout is delivered through Windows updates, and the feature may not be present on every build or device.
- Long-press the Xbox button to bring up the on-screen keyboard, as described in Microsoft’s August 14, 2025 Tech Community announcement.
- If needed, enable controller input in Settings. Microsoft also documents this as an activation path in that announcement; the exact option and behavior can vary by build.
- Navigate the layout with the controller. Use the stick and buttons to select the character or key you need.
If the keyboard does not appear, first confirm that Windows is up to date and that the installed build includes the updated input experience. Rollout and behavior can differ by device and Windows version.

What Windows version and Xbox controller do you need?
You need an Xbox controller and a Windows 11 build that includes the Gamepad keyboard layout. Microsoft’s announcement describes the feature but does not specify a particular controller model or a minimum Windows build number for the keyboard itself. It therefore does not establish that every controller or every Windows 11 installation will behave identically.
Microsoft separately says Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. That requirement applies to Xbox mode, the broader controller-first experience, and should not be treated as a confirmed minimum version for the Gamepad keyboard. How Xbox mode extends controller-first navigation
Xbox mode is a “console inspired, dedicated gaming experience” that offers a controller-optimized way to navigate and play on Windows, according to Microsoft Support, published October 20, 2025. It extends controller use beyond typing to navigating apps and games.
Microsoft’s April 30, 2026 Windows 11 preview update lists Xbox mode for laptops, desktops, and tablets, with entry points through the Xbox app, Game Bar, and Windows logo key + F11. In Xbox mode, open Task View with Win+Tab, a long press of the Xbox button, or a swipe on touch devices. Use the left stick and LB/RB to move between open items, A to bring an app forward, and X to close it. Availability remains limited to supported markets.

When controller typing makes sense
- Couch or living-room use: Enter a search or short message without switching from the controller to a keyboard.
- Handheld PCs: Type when the built-in controls are easier to reach than a separate keyboard.
- Accessibility or setup needs: Controller navigation may suit some users or circumstances, but Microsoft’s material does not provide accessibility testing or comparative performance figures.
A physical keyboard remains a more direct choice for longer or frequent typing. Voice typing is another possible input method, but the available Microsoft material does not compare its speed, accuracy, accessibility, or setup effort with controller typing.
