These radioactive power sources can supply small amounts of electricity for years or decades as their output declines. Whether one would pose a fertility risk depends on its isotope containment, shielding and measured radiation dose—not simply on the word “nuclear.”
What a betavoltaic battery does
A betavoltaic battery converts energy from radioactive decay directly into electricity. Beta particles emitted by an isotope create electron-hole pairs in a semiconductor; collecting those charges produces electrical output. The approach is designed for long-lasting, low-power uses rather than the quick surges of energy demanded by many consumer devices.
A U.S. National Science Foundation SBIR project record from 2005 described a tritium design targeting approximately 100 microwatts in less than 0.5 cubic centimetres. That was a project target, not evidence of a phone-ready product. An ACS review describes efficiency and maximum power density as continuing engineering challenges.
Why “forever” is the wrong promise
Radioactive decay continues over time, so a betavoltaic cell’s output falls rather than staying at its initial level indefinitely. Tritium has a 12.3-year half-life, according to the 2005 NSF SBIR record: after one half-life, half the original tritium nuclei remain. That is not a guarantee that a device will deliver useful power for precisely that long; practical service life depends on the design and the power a particular application can tolerate.

NASA TechPort records in 2026 describe proposed tritium systems with useful lifetimes exceeding 20 years. Those are long service lives, not perpetual full-power operation. The records focus on specialist applications such as sensors, satellites, defense electronics, structural monitoring and medical implants; they do not document a consumer smartphone powered by a betavoltaic cell.
Could one run a smartphone?
The key mismatch is not just battery life but the kind and amount of power available. A phone needs enough energy for demanding, intermittent tasks as well as low-power standby. The records described here concern microwatt- or milliwatt-class targets and specialist loads; none demonstrates a betavoltaic cell powering an ordinary smartphone.

In principle, a system could accumulate a nuclear cell’s low, steady output in a separate energy store and draw from that store when the phone needs a burst of power. That is an engineering possibility, not a demonstrated consumer product. A credible phone claim would need to specify the cell’s sustained output, storage, conversion losses, size, mass and measured performance under actual phone workloads.
Would a radioactive phone battery lower sperm count?
Beta particles are ionizing radiation. The CDC explains that ionizing radiation can alter cells and DNA at sufficiently high doses. CDC/NIOSH identifies ionizing radiation as a reproductive hazard and says a large dose to reproductive organs can damage fertility in men and women.

That general hazard does not establish that a sealed betavoltaic battery would expose a phone user to a harmful dose. OSHA’s 2026 health-effects guidance says temporary or permanent male sterility can occur at testicular doses at or above 15 rad (0.15 Gy) in a brief single exposure. This is a dose context, not a measurement of exposure from a phone battery. WHO notes that radiation effects depend on absorbed dose, radiation type, tissue sensitivity and dose rate.
For an actual product, a fertility-risk estimate would require product-specific measurements: how much radiation escapes in normal use and credible accidents, what shielding is used, and what dose reaches the user’s reproductive organs over time. The available evidence does not provide those measurements for a nuclear-powered smartphone, so it cannot establish that such a phone would lower sperm count—or quantify a risk.

What determines whether a betavoltaic device is safe?
“Nuclear” alone does not describe the risk. The isotope, the amount used, how completely it is contained, the shielding, the radiation dose outside the device and the relevant regulatory controls all matter. A failure that compromises containment is a different scenario from normal use of an intact, tested device; evaluating either requires product-specific evidence.
A historical example illustrates the role of containment testing: Betacel, a miniature promethium betavoltaic battery developed for pacemakers and telemetering instruments, was subject to safety tests intended to ensure that its radioisotope remained contained during normal use and credible accident conditions, according to the American Nuclear Society. That history is not a safety certification for a different isotope, design or consumer phone.

Ordinary mobile-phone radiofrequency emissions are a separate issue. CDC/NIOSH says nonionizing radiation from cell phones in good condition is not considered a fertility or pregnancy risk. That statement does not assess an unshielded radioactive source or answer whether a proposed nuclear battery is safe.
Can you buy one for your phone?
The cited records do not establish that a consumer betavoltaic phone battery or nuclear smartphone charger is available to buy. NASA records associate City Labs with NanoTritium and specialist tritium betavoltaic power sources, but that does not show that a consumer phone product is on sale. The documented applications are specialized, and a general-purpose battery or charger should not be mistaken for this technology.
For a product to support a serious consumer-safety claim, a buyer would need more than a long-life claim: a named device and isotope, verified electrical output, clear use instructions, containment and shielding information, and applicable regulatory documentation. Without those product-specific details, neither phone compatibility nor personal radiation exposure can be assessed.
