Sony’s new Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) feature brings AI-guided upscaling to the standard PS5, but it does not confirm a PS6 handheld. Sony announced QSSR on October 1, 2026, linking it to Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. The handheld connection is speculation in a separate report, not a Sony announcement.
What Sony announced about QSSR
Sony describes Quick Spectral Super Resolution as “a new performance tier of AI upscaling” for the standard PS5. The company says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on that console, improving image detail and stability. Sony says the technology grew out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony’s QSSR announcement does not describe the feature as a handheld announcement.
The first games named
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games using the QSSR library. On announcement day, both were being patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option. Sony says it plans to make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers and expects more games to adopt it, but it did not provide a schedule or name further titles.
Why QSSR is being linked to a PS6 handheld
The connection is an inference, not a confirmed product plan. In its October 2, 2026 article, ComicBook.com argues that QSSR could be relevant to a future PlayStation handheld, while explicitly treating that connection as speculation and noting that little has been confirmed about the PS6 or a possible handheld.

That speculation appears to rest on the idea that AI upscaling could be useful in a device with different performance constraints from a home console. Sony’s announcement establishes that it has brought QSSR to standard PS5 and that the work is connected to Project Amethyst. It does not establish that QSSR was designed for a handheld, that a handheld is in development, or how such a device would run PS5 games.
What the announcement does—and does not—confirm
| Claim | What is established |
|---|---|
| QSSR is coming to standard PS5 games | Sony announced QSSR for standard PS5 and named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first supported titles. |
| QSSR is related to Project Amethyst | Sony says QSSR was born from its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. |
| Sony has confirmed a PS6 handheld | No. Neither the QSSR announcement nor the cited report confirms such a product. |
| QSSR will be used on a PS6 handheld | Not established. Sony did not say the feature was designed for or would be used on a handheld. |
| PS6 launch timing or specifications | Not established by the cited sources. |
How QSSR compares with PS5 Pro’s PSSR
Sony calls PSSR the PS5 Pro’s “gold standard” and describes QSSR as a quicker evolution adapted for standard PS5. The announcement claims QSSR can improve detail and stability, but gives no measured comparison of image quality, resolution, frame rate, or latency between QSSR and PSSR. Without independent tests in the same game, there is no basis here to say which produces better results overall.

Sony developers offered qualitative descriptions of the results. Sucker Punch’s lead rendering engineer, Jasmin Patry, said QSSR resolves fine detail and provides temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. Insomniac’s head of technology, Mike Fitzgerald, said it adds pixel-level clarity and stability in scenes from Marvel’s Wolverine. Those comments describe the developers’ experience; they are not numeric benchmarks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What PS5 owners should watch for
- Check the supported game’s update notes and graphics options to see whether its QSSR patch is available.
- Compare QSSR with the game’s other graphics options on the same PS5 and display. Look at fine detail, image stability during motion, and overall smoothness rather than assuming upscaling automatically improves every aspect.
- Wait for independent comparisons before drawing conclusions about performance or image quality. Sony’s announcement includes no numeric benchmark.
Existing owners of a standard PS5 do not need a different console to use QSSR in a supported game; Sony announced the feature for standard PS5. Whether a game offers it depends on that game’s support and update.
