Oktober 1950 ist das Datum, an dem John Bardeen, Walter Brattain und William Shockley laut einem PCGH-Retro-Beitrag das US-Patent für ihre Transistorentwicklung erhielten. Erfunden wurde der Bell-Labs-Transistor an diesem Tag nicht: Die drei Forscher hatten ihn bereits 1947 entwickelt. Die interne Vorführung folgte am 23. Dezember 1947, die öffentliche Vorstellung laut Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum am 30. Juni 1948.
Wann wurde der erste Transistor erfunden?
Der erste funktionierende Transistor aus den Bell Laboratories entstand 1947. Bardeen, Brattain und Shockley entwickelten dort einen Bipolartransistor; das Deutsche Patent- und Markenamt (DPMA) ordnet die Entwicklung ebenfalls diesem Jahr zu. Das frühe Gerät war ein Germanium-Spitzentransistor mit Punktkontakten. Es war also weder eine Erfindung vom 3. Oktober 1950 noch ein moderner Transistorchip.
Die Stationen danach sind davon getrennt zu betrachten: Das Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum datiert die interne Vorführung auf den 23. Dezember 1947 und die öffentliche Vorstellung in New York auf den 30. Juni 1948. Die im PCGH-Retro-Suchergebnis genannte Patenterteilung erfolgte erst am 3. Oktober 1950. PCGHs Beitrag war beim Abruf nicht verfügbar; für das konkrete Patentdatum liegt daher nur die angezeigte Beitragsbeschreibung vor.
Warum gab es schon 1925 ein Transistorpatent?
Die Vorgeschichte reicht weiter zurück als die Bell-Labs-Arbeit. Julius Edgar Lilienfeld meldete 1925 ein frühes Patent zum Prinzip des Transistors an. Das DPMA weist jedoch darauf hin, dass diese früheren Schritte noch keine praxisreife Umsetzung ergaben. Patentierte Idee und funktionsfähiges Gerät sind deshalb unterschiedliche Maßstäbe, wenn es um die Frage nach dem „ersten“ Transistor geht.

Wer entwickelte den Bell-Labs-Transistor?
John Bardeen, Walter Brattain und William Shockley waren die drei Forscher, die mit der Bell-Labs-Entwicklung verbunden sind. 1956 erhielten sie gemeinsam den Physik-Nobelpreis. Eine alleinige Zuschreibung an einen der drei würde die gemeinsame Entwicklung verkürzen.
Gab es eine unabhängige europäische Entwicklung?
Ja. Herbert Mataré und Heinrich Welker entwickelten nahezu zeitgleich einen eigenen Transistor. Das Deutsche Museum dokumentiert außerdem den Bell-Labs-Transistor Nr. 9, der 1952 nach Deutschland kam. Nach Darstellung des Museums ermöglichte die US-amerikanische Anti-Trust-Politik später eine Lizenz für den Nachbau durch Siemens.

Wer nach dem „ersten“ Transistor fragt, sollte daher präzisieren, ob ein frühes Patent, ein funktionierender Prototyp, eine Vorführung, eine öffentliche Präsentation oder die Patenterteilung gemeint ist. Für den 3. Oktober lautet die präzise Antwort: An diesem Datum wurde 1950 das US-Patent erteilt; die Bell-Labs-Entwicklung selbst datiert auf 1947.
