Dominic Wilcox’s Stained Glass Driverless Sleeper Car is a speculative vehicle concept: a bed inside an autonomously driven vehicle, designed for a passenger to choose a destination and sleep during the journey. It is not presented as a production car. The design article that describes it places the idea in an imagined 2059, where vehicle interiors could become rooms rather than driver-focused cabins.
What is the Stained Glass Driverless Sleeper Car?
Yanko Design’s 2 October 2026 article describes Wilcox’s concept as a single-passenger sleeping space mounted on a modular chassis. The chassis is imagined as a standardized base for motor and automated navigation technology, with different interiors built above it. The sleeper car is one possible configuration; the broader premise allows for temporary spaces such as an office, restaurant, or bedroom.
That arrangement turns the familiar autonomous-car question—what will people do while a car drives?—into a design question about what sort of space a vehicle could provide. In Wilcox’s example, the answer is a bed inside a glass enclosure. The article does not establish that the vehicle was engineered or tested for road use.
How was the stained-glass car made?
According to Yanko Design, Wilcox had not worked with glass before starting the project. He attended a five-day workshop with glass artist Lynette Wrigley, then spent six weeks cutting glass pieces by hand and soldering them onto the frame using the copper foil technique. Recent graduate Massimo Cappella helped with the work.

Middlesex University’s product design department helped develop the chassis base and wooden support frame. The structure was later moved to Lead and Light, which the article describes as a stained-glass workshop in Camden, London. The inspiration followed Wilcox’s visit to Durham Cathedral and his response to its stained-glass windows.
The shell opens upward to let the passenger in, and the article’s photographs show it illuminated. It also incorporates references to the Mini: classic Mini tires sit beneath the glass body, while a traditional Mini boot handle lifts the hydraulically assisted shell. These details connect the object’s appearance and access mechanism to its design references; they do not make it a road-ready vehicle.

What does the 2059 setting mean?
The article situates the concept in a fictional future. Its scenario says the Digital M1 motorway goes through 2058 without a collision because only autonomous vehicles are allowed. That is part of the imagined setting, not a real motorway safety record, a forecast, or evidence that autonomous vehicles are currently safe enough for sleeping passengers.
In the same speculative frame, the idea that conventional safety equipment could become less important is a design premise, not present-day safety guidance. The article does not provide engineering validation, safety testing, or evidence that a passenger could use this concept as transport.

How does it connect to MINI and Taxirobot?
Yanko Design reports that the exhibition was supported by MINI and connects the year 2059 to the original Mini’s 1959 introduction. The car’s Mini-inspired components are visual references within the prototype.
The article also describes Taxirobot, a separate imagined website for ordering autonomous vehicles in 2059. In that concept, a passenger could select a vehicle by group size, choose an interior—such as a restaurant, office, jacuzzi, or bed—and choose an exterior. Options mentioned include a wooden cabin, a retro 2015 car, and Wilcox’s stained-glass design. Taxirobot is presented as a concept, not as a current booking service.
