A plasma beam could, in principle, slow large pieces of space debris without touching them. A laboratory vacuum-chamber experiment has demonstrated the underlying momentum-transfer concept, but the technology has not been tested in orbit and is not ready to remove debris or stop the Kessler Syndrome.

How a plasma beam would slow space debris

The proposed system is a servicing spacecraft carrying a bi-directional magnetic-nozzle radiofrequency plasma thruster. It directs one plasma plume at a debris object. The plume transfers momentum, gradually reducing the object’s orbital speed; that change is intended to lower its orbit so that it can eventually re-enter the atmosphere.

Firing a plume at the target would push the servicing spacecraft in the opposite direction. To counter that recoil, the thruster ejects a second plasma plume away from the target. The aim is to balance the forces on the servicing spacecraft while it continues applying force to the debris. The spacecraft would therefore need to maintain its position relative to the target as the target’s orbit changes. Kazunori Takahashi and co-authors describe this approach in their 2025 Scientific Reports paper.

This is a proposal for dealing with large, trackable objects in low Earth orbit, not a way to sweep up every fragment. Kessler Syndrome describes a chain-reaction risk: if collisions produce debris faster than natural orbital decay removes it, the growing debris population can cause more collisions and further increase that population.

What the 2025 design changes

The basic idea of ejecting plasma in opposite directions had already been demonstrated in a laboratory experiment in 2018, according to the Scientific Reports papers. The 2025 study investigates a cusp-type magnetic-field configuration inspired by magnetic-confinement systems. The cusp is intended to strengthen the beam compared with the earlier straight-field design.

What the experiment showed—and what the figures mean

IEEE Spectrum reported several force figures from the controlled vacuum-chamber experiment. They are laboratory results, not measurements from a debris-removal mission:

  • 20% force improvement: reported by IEEE Spectrum for the newer configuration.
  • 17.1 millinewtons at the same power level: a force figure reported by IEEE Spectrum in its comparison of the configurations.
  • About 25 millinewtons at 5 kilowatts: reported by IEEE Spectrum; the earlier test it compares with used about 3 kilowatts.
  • About 30 millinewtons: the approximate force discussed by IEEE Spectrum as necessary to decelerate a one-tonne debris object in 100 days.

These figures should not be treated as interchangeable performance claims: the reporting gives them in different comparisons and operating contexts. In particular, the roughly 30-millinewton figure is a discussed requirement for a specific object and timescale, not a demonstration that the thruster has achieved that result against debris in orbit.

Why a vacuum-chamber result is not an orbital cleanup system

The experiment positioned the thruster roughly 30 centimeters from its target, according to IEEE Spectrum. A real mission would need to operate across meter-scale separation while controlling the spacecraft’s relative motion as it applies force and the target slows. Maintaining that geometry and guidance over time is a different challenge from demonstrating momentum transfer at laboratory distance.

  • ✔ FOR AGES 14+: The plasma orb is not a toy and is intended for older children. Do not operate the orb on a metal surface. Do not touch the orb’s surface with wet or damp hands or body parts. Do not touch the orb for prolonged periods of time. Please read all warnings and safety information in the enclosed instruction manual to ensure safe operation.

The design also has to keep both plumes operating and use propellant to produce them, while sustaining the operation for long periods. The concept therefore faces several linked mission questions:

  • Beam control at useful range: Can the plume transfer enough momentum at the separation required for an orbital encounter?
  • Rendezvous and station-keeping: Can the servicing spacecraft safely approach and remain in the right relative position as the target’s motion changes?
  • Endurance and propellant: Can it operate long enough, with an acceptable propellant burden, to make a meaningful change to a large object’s orbit?
  • Validation on real debris: Can the method be demonstrated with the target dynamics and conditions of an actual orbital mission?

These are why the technology remains at the research stage rather than being an operational response to Kessler Syndrome.

How it compares with other debris-removal concepts

The alternatives differ in how they interact with a target, but the cited 2025 material does not establish a common set of measured performance values across the methods. The comparison below reflects only distinctions reported in that material.

Approach How it interacts with debris Constraint or evidence established here
Bi-directional plasma beam Noncontact momentum transfer from a plasma plume, with an opposing plume intended to cancel recoil on the servicing spacecraft. Laboratory vacuum-chamber demonstration; orbital-range beam control, endurance, propellant use and real-debris validation remain open challenges.
Grapples and nets Contact with the target. They risk entanglement with tumbling objects. Comparable force, target-size range and readiness values are not stated in the cited Scientific Reports (2025) material.
Laser ablation Noncontact approach. Comparable momentum-transfer, power, target-size and readiness values are not stated in the cited Scientific Reports (2025) material.
Ion beams Noncontact approach. Comparable momentum-transfer, power, target-size and readiness values are not stated in the cited Scientific Reports (2025) material.

Noncontact operation avoids physically grappling a target, but it does not remove the need for precise guidance. For the plasma proposal, the key test is not simply whether a beam can exert force; it is whether a spacecraft can keep that force useful and controlled at orbital distances for long enough to change a target’s orbit.

What would make the proposal mission-ready

A practical debris-removal mission would need to show that the thruster can deliver controlled momentum transfer at meter-scale separation, maintain safe relative motion during extended operation, and do so within workable power and propellant limits. It would also need validation against real debris rather than relying on a nearby laboratory target. The published chamber results establish a promising propulsion and momentum-transfer concept, but do not yet answer those mission-level questions.
