Use UIO for suitable memory-mapped peripherals with a small kernel stub, VFIO with IOMMU protection when direct access and DMA isolation matter, and usbfs/libusb for many USB devices. Use FUSE for filesystems—not as a general hardware-driver framework.
What does “a userspace driver” mean in Linux?
It means that some or most device-specific control logic runs in an ordinary process rather than in a kernel driver. It does not mean the kernel disappears from the design: the kernel still mediates access through an interface, and a small kernel component may remain responsible for exposing resources, handling events, or enforcing ownership.
The right boundary depends on the device bus, whether it performs DMA, how interrupts are handled, what isolation is required, and whether an existing kernel subsystem already supports it. Moving code out of the kernel can reduce the amount of privileged code, but it does not automatically solve device permissions, safe DMA, hot-unplug, recovery, or performance.
Which userspace mechanism fits the device?
| Mechanism | Best fit | Kernel boundary | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| UIO | Memory-mapped peripherals with straightforward interrupt needs | A small stub driver exposes selected mappings and an event interface to a userspace process. | Isolation and feature coverage are limited; design DMA handling and access permissions deliberately. See the Linux kernel UIO guide and UIO HOWTO. |
| VFIO with IOMMUFD | PCI devices, accelerators, or other devices needing direct access with IOMMU protection | Userspace accesses a VFIO device file; IOMMUFD manages I/O page tables in the newer device-cdev model. | Setup, device ownership, and binding rules require care, and the interfaces and configuration continue to evolve. See the Linux kernel VFIO and IOMMUFD documentation. |
| USB with usbfs/libusb | Vendor-specific USB devices controlled by an application or library | The application uses USB device files and a userspace library to claim an interface and issue transfers. | Account for permissions, interface ownership, transfer semantics, and disconnect recovery. See the Linux USB host-side API documentation. |
| FUSE | Filesystem implementations whose policy or data handling belongs in a daemon | The kernel module communicates with a userspace filesystem daemon through /dev/fuse. |
It implements filesystem semantics, not a general hardware-driver API; daemon overhead and filesystem security choices matter. See the Linux kernel FUSE documentation and fuse(4). |
When is UIO appropriate?
UIO is a practical fit when a peripheral presents memory-mapped registers, a simple interrupt model, and a control path that benefits from ordinary userspace development. A kernel stub provides the boundary; the userspace program handles the bulk of the device-specific policy and control.

Before choosing it, verify that the device’s mappings and event model cover what the application needs, and work out how DMA is controlled. A mapping and interrupt notification interface should not be mistaken for a complete security or DMA-isolation solution. If the design depends on bus mastering or stronger isolation, evaluate VFIO and IOMMU support instead.
When should you choose VFIO and IOMMUFD?
Consider VFIO when userspace needs direct control of a device and the design depends on IOMMU-backed protection—particularly for PCI devices and accelerators that may perform DMA. The Linux kernel describes VFIO as a framework for exposing direct device access to userspace in a secure, IOMMU-protected environment.

The newer direction documented by the kernel uses a VFIO device cdev together with IOMMUFD for I/O page-table management. This is not a drop-in simplification of every setup: decide which process owns the device, understand the applicable binding and isolation requirements, and confirm that the target kernel and platform support the required interfaces.
Can a USB device be controlled without a kernel driver?
Often, yes. Linux’s USB userspace path lets an application use usbfs device files, commonly through libusb in C or C++. The application can claim an interface and issue bulk, interrupt, or isochronous transfers, as described in the Linux USB host-side API documentation.

First check whether a kernel class driver already owns the interface and whether the application is permitted to access the device. Then implement the device protocol and transfer handling in the application. Treat disconnection as a normal failure path: handle errors such as ENODEV, release or discard stale state, and make reconnection or process restart behavior explicit. Userspace access changes where the logic runs; it does not remove responsibility for permissions, interface claiming, or recovery.
Why is FUSE different?
FUSE is a userspace filesystem framework. Its kernel module acts as the client of a protocol, while a userspace daemon serves filesystem operations and supplies data and metadata. Applications interact with the mounted filesystem through the usual filesystem interface; they are not using FUSE as a generic way to access hardware registers or device interrupts.

FUSE can be the right choice when filesystem behavior belongs in a daemon. Its filesystem semantics and daemon overhead are part of that choice. Passthrough modes, where used, can change security and performance trade-offs; they do not turn FUSE into a general-purpose hardware-driver mechanism.

- Identify the bus and existing owner. Determine whether the device is memory-mapped, PCI, USB, or a filesystem, and check whether an existing kernel subsystem or class driver already owns the relevant interface.
- Define the ownership and DMA model. For a bus-mastering device, treat DMA isolation and IOMMU ownership as core design requirements. Evaluate VFIO/IOMMUFD where direct access with isolation is needed; do not infer DMA safety from a userspace mapping alone.
- Match the kernel boundary to the device. For a simple memory-mapped peripheral, check whether UIO’s mappings and interrupt interface are sufficient. For USB, check the usbfs/libusb route and interface ownership. For filesystem behavior, use FUSE.
- Specify access and recovery. Define which users and processes may open the device, and decide how the system handles process exit, reset, unplug, reconnect, and malformed-device behavior.
- Measure on the target board. Set latency and throughput requirements and benchmark the actual device, kernel, and application. The cited kernel interface documentation does not establish a universal performance ranking or numeric speedup among UIO, VFIO, libusb, and in-kernel drivers.
What changes—and what does not—when code moves to user space?
Userspace can make device-specific policy easier to develop and restart without placing all of it in the kernel. The kernel boundary still matters: it determines which resources are exposed, how device ownership is enforced, and what protection applies to DMA and interrupts. The application or daemon must also cope with permissions, device disappearance, process failure, and its own protocol’s malformed inputs.
