6G is the next generation of mobile communications, known in the International Telecommunication Union’s standards process as IMT-2030. It is not a mature consumer service today. The standards process is underway: candidate technologies are expected in 2027, first 6G standards work under 3GPP Release 21 is targeted for December 2028, and ITU says final technology standards could be approved by 2030. Those are standards milestones, not promised network launch dates.
What is 6G?
6G is the name commonly used for the mobile communications generation being developed after 5G. In the ITU-R process, its formal framework is called IMT-2030. The ITU approved that framework, Recommendation ITU-R M.2160, in 2023. It sets out a direction for the technology and a way to assess future candidate systems; it is not a finished specification for a retail network.
That distinction matters: “6G” currently describes a standards and technology-development effort, not a single product or service that works the same way everywhere.
Is 6G available yet?
No broadly available, standards-based 6G consumer network has been established. As of October 1, 2026, the work is still progressing through technical requirements, evaluation methods and candidate technology submissions. A lab demonstration or trial would not by itself mean that consumers can subscribe to a commercial 6G service.

How far away is a 6G rollout?
Broad consumer rollout is years away. Based on the published standards calendar, initial commercial systems might appear around the end of the 2020s or near 2030 if standards, spectrum and operator plans align. That is an inference from the standards schedule, not an announced global launch date.

There will not necessarily be one worldwide switch-on. Countries can make spectrum and regulatory decisions at different times, and operators will decide when and where to invest. A finalized standard is an important step, but it does not guarantee immediate service in a particular country.

| June 2026 | ITU-R Working Party 5D completed draft evaluation guidelines and sent them onward for approval. |
| Early 2027 | ITU expects companies and industry associations to submit candidate IMT-2030 radio-interface technologies. |
| December 2028 | A European Commission notice reports that 3GPP Release 21 schedules the start of first 6G standards work for this month. |
| By 2030 | ITU says the final set of 6G technology standards could be approved by this point. |
These dates describe standards work. They do not specify when an operator will launch service, which bands it will use, or when compatible devices will be sold.

What is 6G intended to add?
The IMT-2030 framework looks beyond faster downloads. The ITU’s 2023 framework defines six usage scenarios: three extend scenarios from IMT-2020 (the ITU name for 5G), and three are new. It also identifies 15 capabilities, nine of them derived or extended from IMT-2020 capabilities.
The intended scope includes immersive experiences, broader coverage and new forms of collaboration. The framework also points to sustainability, more efficient spectrum use, and integration of communications with sensing and other network functions. These are development goals and areas for evaluation, not features guaranteed to appear in every network or device.

A framework target, not a speed promise
The ITU’s 2023 framework lists a target of 1.5–3 times better spectrum efficiency than IMT-2020. This is a framework target, not a measured result from a commercial 6G service. It should not be read as a promise that a 6G user will see a fixed increase in download speed, lower latency, or better coverage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How is 6G different from 5G?
5G, or IMT-2020, is the preceding generation; 6G, or IMT-2030, is still being specified. The practical difference for a reader today is therefore less about comparing two retail services and more about comparing a deployed generation with a framework and standards process that is not complete.

| Performance evidence | Commercial performance depends on the actual network, device and conditions. | Framework targets, including spectrum efficiency, are not measured consumer-network performance. |
Will you need a new phone for 6G?
Probably, if you want to connect directly to a future 6G network: a phone needs compatible radio hardware and software, and a 5G-only phone cannot become a 6G phone through a routine settings update. However, consumer 6G device specifications and release timing are not established yet, so there is no current 6G phone to buy on the basis of this standards calendar.
Do not replace a working phone because a vendor or retailer uses “6G-ready” as a marketing phrase. Wait for a named device, a supported standard, and an operator service in your area before treating compatibility as real.
Quick Recap
What should you watch for next?
- Candidate submissions in 2027: these will show which radio-interface technologies are being proposed for evaluation, not that a commercial network is ready.
- 3GPP Release 21 work: the reported December 2028 target is for the start of first 6G standards work, not a consumer launch.
- National spectrum and regulatory decisions: these help determine which bands can be used and when operators can deploy them.
- Operator announcements tied to finalized standards: a concrete local service announcement is more useful to consumers than a general forecast of 6G speeds or dates.
