If a GPU’s processors finish calculations faster than memory can deliver model weights, activations, and intermediate results, the processors can sit idle waiting for data. HBM3 helps reduce that bottleneck by placing wide, stacked memory close to the accelerator; HBM3E pushes capacity and bandwidth further, while HBM4 points to the next step in per-stack bandwidth.
How memory bandwidth can limit AI performance
Training and running AI models involve repeated movement of weights, activations, and intermediate results between memory and compute units. Parallel matrix operations can use enormous amounts of arithmetic, but that arithmetic can only proceed at full speed when data arrives quickly enough. When it does not, memory bandwidth—not the accelerator’s theoretical compute rate—can limit performance.
Bandwidth is the rate at which data can be transferred. Capacity is how much data can be kept in memory at once. Those are separate constraints: an accelerator may have enough bandwidth to process data quickly but too little capacity to keep a model’s working set nearby, or enough capacity but insufficient bandwidth to feed its compute units.
What HBM3 changes
High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) uses stacked memory dies and a wide interface positioned close to the accelerator package. Compared with conventional server memory, this arrangement is designed to deliver much higher bandwidth in a compact, accelerator-attached form. It can help keep frequently used model data close to the compute engines and reduce the impact of data-delivery limits.

HBM is ordinarily integrated into an accelerator package, not installed by a user as a RAM upgrade. The amount and type of HBM are therefore part of choosing an accelerator and its server platform.
HBM capacity and bandwidth in cited accelerator examples
The figures below describe specific products, not a universal HBM3 performance level. The H100 figure is for NVIDIA’s SXM configuration; AMD labels MI300X bandwidth as peak theoretical. Micron’s stack figures describe individual memory stacks, so they should not be treated as whole-accelerator totals or compared directly with platform-level figures.

| Memory generation or product | Capacity | Bandwidth | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA H100 SXM (HBM3) | Not stated in the cited NVIDIA technical description | 3 TB/s | NVIDIA’s reported memory bandwidth for H100 SXM |
| AMD Instinct MI300X (HBM3) | 192 GB | 5.325 TB/s peak theoretical | AMD’s product-page specifications for the MI300X accelerator |
| Micron HBM3E, 8-high stack | 24 GB | More than 1.2 TB/s | Micron’s stack specification; identified for NVIDIA H200 GPUs |
| Micron HBM3E, 12-high offering | 36 GB | Not stated | Micron’s offering for AMD Instinct MI350X platforms |
| Micron HBM4 stack | Not stated | More than 2.8 TB/s per stack | Micron describes a 2048-pin interface operating above 11 Gbps |
These examples illustrate why neither a capacity number nor a bandwidth number tells the whole performance story. The H100 and MI300X figures are product-level bandwidth claims, whereas Micron’s HBM3E and HBM4 figures are per-stack specifications. A platform may use multiple stacks, but the cited stack specifications alone do not establish the accelerator’s total usable bandwidth.
How HBM3E and HBM4 extend the approach
HBM3E: more capacity and bandwidth in newer platforms
Micron lists an HBM3E 24 GB 8-high stack delivering more than 1.2 TB/s and identifies it for NVIDIA H200 GPUs. Its HBM3E 36 GB 12-high offering is identified for AMD Instinct MI350X platforms; the cited product information does not state a bandwidth figure for that offering. Together, these examples show HBM3E being used to raise stack capacity and, where specified, bandwidth for newer accelerator platforms.

HBM4: a higher-bandwidth next generation
Micron describes HBM4 with a 2048-pin interface operating above 11 Gbps and more than 2.8 TB/s of bandwidth per stack. That is a per-stack specification, not a figure for a complete accelerator. It signals continued work on memory delivery as compute grows, but by itself does not establish the performance, availability, or system configuration of a particular HBM4-based product.

Peak bandwidth and HBM capacity are useful starting points, not application benchmarks. A larger memory capacity can let more model state remain close to the accelerator and reduce traffic to memory elsewhere in the system. Higher bandwidth can help keep parallel compute busy. The benefit in a particular workload depends on whether that workload is constrained by capacity, data movement, compute, or other parts of the system.

- Capacity: Does the accelerator hold the model and its working data in nearby memory?
- Bandwidth: How quickly can the platform supply data, and is the figure peak theoretical or measured under a stated workload?
- Energy efficiency: What is the system-level energy cost of delivering the required performance? The cited specifications do not provide comparable efficiency figures.
- Platform fit: Check software ecosystem, interconnect, system availability, and total cost alongside memory specifications.
- Configuration: Confirm whether a published bandwidth number applies to a stack, an accelerator, or a full system before comparing it with another figure.
HBM3 is an important way to reduce memory bottlenecks in AI accelerators, but it is not a guarantee that every AI workload will run faster. HBM3E increases the capacity and bandwidth available in newer platforms, and HBM4’s per-stack specification shows the direction of further memory scaling. The right choice depends on how the workload uses memory and on the capabilities of the complete platform.
