Microsoft Teams lets users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license summarize shared Word documents directly from a file thumbnail in a 1:1 or group chat. Choose Summarize for me to get context without opening the document first; Microsoft says the feature is available on mobile as well as desktop.

How to summarize a file in Teams mobile

  1. Open the Teams 1:1 or group chat that contains the shared file.

  2. Find the file thumbnail and select Summarize for me.

  3. Read the Copilot-generated summary for a quick overview before deciding whether to open the document.

    • Open workspaces are great for collaboration, but not so great when the noise around you makes it hard to concentrate. Active noise cancellation substantially reduces unwanted ambient sound, so you can get focused and stay focused.
    • Great for Music and Talking with immersive sound for listening to music and a noise-canceling mic that ensures that your voice is heard on the other end of a call—not the noise around you.
    • On ear controls to adjust volume, start/end calls, and invoke Teams. Plus button controls for power, active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless Bluetooth pairing, and mute on/off or use the flip-to-mute mic feature.
    • Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.

Microsoft announced the feature for shared Microsoft Word documents in October 2025, describing it as a way to grasp key ideas without reading an entire document on a small screen. Microsoft’s Teams What’s New page lists the feature under October 2025 as available with a Copilot license.

What files and chats does the feature cover?

The launch announcement specifies shared Word documents in Teams one-to-one and group chats. It does not establish that the chat-thumbnail summary action covers every file type. Microsoft’s announcement says summaries are available on mobile, but does not separately name iPhone and Android availability in the cited feature description.

This is distinct from Microsoft’s broader mobile app guidance, updated in February 2026. That guidance says users can preview Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files and ask Copilot Chat questions, while full browsing and editing are directed to the dedicated Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive apps. That broader guidance describes other mobile workflows, not an expansion of the Teams chat summary feature. See Microsoft Support’s mobile-app guidance.

Do you need a Copilot license?

Yes. Microsoft states that viewing concise summaries of shared chat files requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Even with the license, what appears can depend on your organization’s tenant configuration and feature rollout status.

How file permissions and sensitivity labels apply

Microsoft says the feature respects the file’s security policies: only people who have access to the file receive a summary, and the summary carries the same sensitivity label as the original file. This is Microsoft’s documented behavior; organizations should still account for their own licensing, configuration, and rollout when determining what users can access.

How it differs from opening or previewing a file

The summary is an at-a-glance context step launched from the chat file thumbnail, rather than a replacement for the document. It is useful when you want the key ideas before opening a shared Word file; use the dedicated Office or OneDrive apps when you need the full mobile browsing or editing experience described in Microsoft’s mobile guidance.
