Verdict: 1Password Business is a strong choice for organizations that want centrally managed shared vaults, detailed access controls, security reporting, and developer-oriented credential tools. Its main trade-offs are the per-user subscription cost, lack of self-hosted deployment, and desktop automation that may be inconsistent. For a small team, compare the Business plan with Teams Starter Pack before choosing.

What does 1Password Business cost?

1Password’s official pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists Business at $8.99 USD per user per month, billed annually. That works out to $107.88 per user per year at the listed rate. The page also offers a 14-day free trial. Confirm the current checkout terms and applicable taxes for your location before subscribing.

Plan Listed price Best suited to
Teams Starter Pack $24.95 USD per month when billed annually; includes up to 10 members Small teams that fit within the member limit
Business $8.99 USD per user per month, billed annually Organizations that need Business plan governance and features
Enterprise Custom pricing Organizations that need an individually priced Enterprise arrangement
MSP edition Not stated; consumption-based billing Managed service providers using the dedicated MSP console

The Teams Starter Pack’s flat price and member cap make it worth comparing with Business for a small group; the Business price scales with the number of users. The official pricing information does not establish that the Starter Pack includes every Business feature, so check the plan comparison against the controls your organization actually needs.

What do you get with 1Password Business?

Shared vaults and access governance

Teams can store and share credentials in encrypted vaults, then use role-based permissions to control who may view, edit, copy, share, or export items. This gives administrators more control than handing out a shared password informally, particularly when responsibilities change or access needs to be limited.

  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Business also supports identity-provider integrations and offers up to 20 guest accounts, according to 1Password’s plan comparison. Guests can access selected vaults, which can be useful for external collaborators who do not need the same access as employees. Check the specific integration and guest limits against your identity provider and collaboration model.

Security visibility and reporting

Watchtower and security alerts flag compromised, weak, reused, or expiring passwords. Reporting can also show two-factor authentication and passkey adoption. These tools help teams spot credential risks and gaps in adoption; they do not replace decisions about who should have access or how quickly a suspected incident must be handled.

Apps, browsers, and personal use

1Password offers apps for macOS, iOS, watchOS, Windows, Android, and Linux, along with browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Brave. Business users also receive a 1Password Families membership for personal use at no additional charge, according to the company. The personal membership is a separate benefit from the organization’s shared vaults and administrative controls.

Developer workflows

For engineering teams, the plan includes SSH-key signing, Git-commit signing, a command-line interface, SDKs, and integrations for IDE, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code workflows. These capabilities can help teams use managed credentials and signing tools within development processes instead of relying only on general-purpose password storage. Assess the exact tools and workflows your engineers use before treating this as a replacement for every secrets-management system.

Is 1Password Business secure enough for a small business?

Its published design combines end-to-end AES-256 encryption with Two-Key Derivation based on both the account password and a Secret Key. Secure Remote Password is used for authentication, and the service supports two-factor authentication, biometrics, and passkeys. 1Password also cites independent audits. These are meaningful elements of a security model, but no password manager can compensate for weak account recovery practices, overly broad permissions, or poor offboarding.

For a small business, the practical question is whether the team will consistently use the controls: set appropriate vault access, enable stronger sign-in methods, review alerts, and remove access when a person leaves. Business adds centralized administration and visibility that may be valuable as a team grows, but a very small team with basic sharing needs may find the lower-priced Teams Starter Pack adequate.

What are the disadvantages and limits?

Subscription costs can add up

Business is priced per user and billed annually. TechRadar has identified price as a potential drawback, especially for organizations that need advanced features. Compare the annual cost for active seats with your budget and the value of the governance, reporting, and developer features you will actually use.

There is no self-hosted option

WIRED lists the lack of a self-hosted option as a weakness. Organizations that require on-premises operation or direct control over deployment infrastructure should treat that as a significant fit issue rather than assuming a Business subscription can be installed on their own servers.

Desktop automation may be finicky

WIRED reports that desktop hot keys and auto-login can be inconsistent. If those features are central to your employees’ daily workflow, test them on the operating systems and applications the team uses before committing.

Setup and syncing need internet access

TechRadar reports that stored passwords can be viewed and used offline, but initial setup and synchronization require an internet connection. That distinction matters for users who need credentials while disconnected: offline access is not the same as being able to enroll or sync a new device without connectivity.

SSO does not cover every access problem

Single sign-on can simplify access to connected applications, but it is not a complete access-management strategy. In its 2025 materials, 1Password argues that SSO does not cover every SaaS identity. Organizations should also account for unmanaged applications and contractor access rather than assuming an identity provider alone gives them a complete view.

Who should choose 1Password Business?

It is a good fit for organizations that need centrally governed vaults, granular sharing, security alerts, passkey visibility, developer tooling, or broad platform support. It is less suitable if self-hosting is mandatory, the budget cannot accommodate the annual per-seat cost, or desktop automation must work flawlessly without testing.

Before choosing, compare password managers on the criteria that affect your environment:

  • Total annual cost per active user, including the plan and seat count you actually need.
  • How precisely administrators can control shared-vault access and item actions.
  • Coverage for your identity provider, SSO, and SCIM requirements.
  • Support for developer secrets and signing workflows used by your engineering team.
  • How guest and contractor access is handled.
  • The depth of audit and security reporting available on the plan.
  • Offline behavior, self-hosting, and any data-residency requirements.
  • Support quality and the response process your organization requires.
