Yes. The UK Civil Aviation Authority has granted HyImpulse UK Limited a current spaceflight operator licence for its SR75 rocket. HyImpulse is targeting spring 2027 for the vehicle’s first launch from European soil, at SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland, but that is a target—not a confirmed launch date. Final operational activities with the CAA and SaxaVord are still under way.
What the UK licence covers
The CAA’s record identifies “HyImpulse – SR75 – Spaceflight Operator Licence” as a licence granted to HyImpulse UK Limited under the Space Industry Act 2018. The record is marked current, version 1, and dated 1 October 2026. This is a granted licence, not an application or consultation. CAA licence record
The CAA says launch operator licences cover activities such as vertically launched vehicles operating from a spaceport. Its assessment framework includes safety and environmental requirements as well as tests concerning international obligations, national security, national interest, financial resources, and whether applicants are fit and proper persons. The application materials include a safety case, an Assessment of Environmental Effects, a draft security programme, and a cyber security strategy. CAA operator licensing guidance
The operator licence does not set a launch date or guarantee a flight. HyImpulse says final operational activities with the regulator and spaceport remain in progress. SaxaVord has a separate CAA spaceport licence, granted in December 2023; the spaceport’s licence and HyImpulse’s launch operator licence are distinct approvals. When is the SaxaVord flight expected?
HyImpulse’s current target is spring 2027 for the first SR75 launch from European soil, from SaxaVord in Shetland. The company has not announced a confirmed launch day. An earlier SaxaVord update, published 19 March 2026, had described the second SR75 flight as targeted for later that year; the newer spring 2027 target supersedes that earlier schedule expectation. HyImpulse update SaxaVord’s 19 March 2026 announcement
The SR75’s inaugural flight was from Koonibba, Australia, according to SaxaVord’s March 2026 account. The planned Shetland mission would therefore be its first launch from European soil, not a claim that the rocket has already flown from SaxaVord. SaxaVord announcement

The 2027 SaxaVord vehicle is SR75, not SL1
HyImpulse has two different vehicles in its plans. SR75 is a suborbital research and technology rocket; SL1 is the company’s orbital small-satellite launcher. HyImpulse lists both in its 2027 plans, but the SaxaVord target is for SR75. A suborbital SR75 flight would not be SL1’s first orbital launch. HyImpulse vehicle information SaxaVord announcement
| Vehicle | Mission type and intended task | Schedule stated in the cited updates |
|---|---|---|
| SR75 | Suborbital research and technology testing, including microgravity experiments, atmospheric research, and technology demonstrations. SaxaVord describes it as a single-stage vehicle. | HyImpulse targets spring 2027 for its first launch from European soil at SaxaVord. This remains a target. |
| SL1 | Orbital small-satellite launcher, intended to deploy satellites into orbit. | HyImpulse also lists SL1 in its 2027 plans; the sources cited here do not establish a confirmed launch date. |
SaxaVord says the SR75 can support microgravity research, atmospheric testing, and payload qualification ahead of orbital deployment. It described the March 2026 launch-services agreement as covering the vehicle’s second flight and said it would provide infrastructure and operational support. The announcement did not identify a payload customer for the planned 2027 flight. SaxaVord announcement

What is publicly stated about the SR75?
SaxaVord’s March 2026 announcement gives the following SR75 figures. They are spaceport-stated specifications, not independently verified performance guarantees for the planned SaxaVord flight. SaxaVord announcement
- Sea-level thrust: 75 kilonewtons.
- Maximum altitude: up to 200 kilometres.
- Payload capacity: up to 250 kilograms.
- Recovery: a two-stage parachute system.
A separate CAA consultation description from 2025 outlined an applicant proposal for up to one SR75 launch per year from SaxaVord, travelling north over the sea. It described the vehicle as approximately 13 metres long and 0.6 metres in diameter. Those are details of the earlier proposal, not confirmation of final licence conditions or the exact configuration and flight profile for 2027. CAA consultation material

Why the licence matters—and what remains uncertain
The grant is a regulatory milestone: HyImpulse now holds the CAA operator licence associated with SR75 launch activity. The remaining distinction is between permission to conduct regulated operations and readiness to fly on a particular date. HyImpulse’s statement that final operational work continues means readers should treat spring 2027 as a plan that may change, not a scheduled or guaranteed launch.
At the time of the cited announcements, the public information also did not name a payload for that flight. The mission is described as suborbital, and the available details do not establish that it will deploy a satellite or reach orbit.
Matt Archer, Director of Launch at the UK Space Agency, said in SaxaVord’s 19 March 2026 announcement: “Assured access to space means greater resilience for our space sector, new skilled jobs, and a stronger signal to investors that Britain is serious about its place in the new space economy.” SaxaVord announcement
