IBM Bob’s self-hosted option puts its backend on an enterprise’s own Red Hat OpenShift cluster while developers continue using Bob IDE and Bob Shell. IBM says general availability began September 24, 2026. Teams can connect that backend to an eligible external model service or run supported open-weight models on their own GPUs; those choices have different network and data-handling implications.

What IBM Bob self-hosted includes

In a self-hosted deployment, the organization operates Bob’s backend as a workload on its OpenShift cluster. IBM describes a package that includes identity, an inference gateway, audit logging, and usage metering, managed by an operator. Developers retain the familiar Bob IDE and Bob Shell interfaces.

This is not simply an option to store code locally while IBM runs the rest of the service. The customer is responsible for the infrastructure, integrations, and lifecycle operations behind the deployment. IBM’s self-hosted overview documentation describes the platform responsibilities.

Choose where model inference happens

The backend location and the model’s location are separate choices. In both routes below, Bob’s backend runs on the customer’s OpenShift cluster; inference and the network path taken by code context differ.

Deployment route Where inference runs Connectivity and model access What to assess
Hybrid or private SaaS model connectivity At the external model service Bob sends requests, including the code context they carry, to a customer’s model-service account over the applicable network connection. The model is customer-provided, with IBM describing an eligible bring-your-own-license approach. Confirm the service, account eligibility, network controls, and whether sending the relevant code context to that service meets organizational policy.
Fully self-hosted model On GPUs operated by the customer The model runs within customer infrastructure and can support a network with no outbound connection. Plan for customer GPU capacity and confirm model, hardware, context-length, and concurrency requirements with IBM and the model vendor.

IBM’s September 30 product announcement lists Claude Sonnet 5.0, Claude Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.7 Flash, and OpenAI GPT 5.6 Sol for hybrid or private SaaS connectivity. IBM’s September release post names NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Ultra and Poolside Laguna S 2.1 for fully self-hosted use. The supported set and licensing eligibility should be confirmed with IBM before planning a deployment. IBM says it plans to expand model support and introduce multi-model routing in future releases; those are plans, not currently available capabilities established by the cited announcements.

IBM does not state a specific GPU server configuration. It says sizing depends on model-vendor guidance, quantization, context length, and the number of developers served concurrently. A GPU server for local AI inference is relevant only to teams choosing the fully self-hosted model route; the sources do not establish a recommended system or particular product.

How to evaluate an air-gapped deployment

IBM says its installation CLI can mirror images to a private registry and transfer images from a connected system into an isolated environment. That provides an installation path for disconnected networks, but teams still need to validate their own image-transfer controls, registry, and platform procedures.

  1. Confirm the target platform. Bob self-hosted runs on a customer-operated Red Hat OpenShift cluster. Check the current IBM installation documentation for supported configurations and prerequisites.
  2. Decide the model route. For a disconnected deployment, assess a supported model that runs on customer GPUs. An external model service requires the network connectivity needed to reach that service.
  3. Prepare image transfer. Use IBM’s installation CLI to mirror images to the private registry or transfer them from a connected system into the isolated environment, following the current installation instructions.
  4. Validate security and operations. Map platform identity, network, storage, logging, monitoring, and lifecycle responsibilities before exposing the environment to developers.

IBM describes a single-node OpenShift installation as sufficient for a proof of concept, not as a production sizing recommendation. Production requirements depend on the intended model, workload, and concurrency and should be validated against IBM’s current installation documentation.

Self-hosted versus IBM Bob SaaS

Consideration IBM Bob SaaS Self-hosted
Backend infrastructure Hosted and managed by IBM Runs on the customer’s OpenShift cluster
Operations and updates IBM manages the service and provides automatic updates Customer manages lifecycle operations and integrations
Security configuration Managed as part of IBM’s hosted service Customer configures relevant OpenShift platform controls, including security event logging and monitoring
Data residency and model path Depends on the SaaS service and selected model path Backend resides in customer infrastructure; inference may still go to an external model service unless a customer-hosted model is selected

Self-hosting offers control over the backend environment, but it does not by itself establish that every request or all code context stays on premises. That depends on the model route and network path. Teams with residency or sovereignty requirements should assess the full request path rather than infer data location from backend hosting alone.

Security and operational responsibilities

IBM’s release post lists audit logging in the self-hosted package. Its documentation separately says Bob does not provide security event logging and monitoring; those are managed at the OpenShift platform level. Audit logging in the package should not be treated as a substitute for the organization’s required security-event collection, monitoring, or SIEM controls.

IBM frames the launch around enterprise control of AI infrastructure. Its October 1 announcement cited Futurum Research projections that hybrid and edge deployments would represent 44% of the AI infrastructure market by 2030, compared with 46% for public cloud; these are forecasts, not current market shares. The announcement also cited a June 2026 IBM Institute for Business Value report finding that 68% of surveyed executives said meeting data residency and sovereignty requirements across geographies was challenging. These figures describe the market context, not the performance or suitability of a particular Bob deployment.
