Yes, a portable MRI can show signs of an ischemic stroke, but it can miss small infarcts and is not a universal replacement for CT or conventional MRI. It brings brain imaging to a patient’s bedside, which can reduce the need to move someone who is critically ill or difficult to transport. Results must be interpreted by a trained physician, and the evidence supports portable MRI as a clinical imaging adjunct—not a home test or stand-alone way to rule out stroke.
What a portable MRI does in suspected stroke
Portable MRI uses a low magnetic field and can be brought to a patient rather than requiring the patient to travel to a conventional scanner. The best-documented stroke platform in the available evidence is Hyperfine’s Swoop Portable MR Imaging System. It is intended to produce images of internal head structures when a full diagnostic examination is not clinically practical.
The FDA-cleared intended-use language says that, when interpreted by a trained physician, the images provide information that can be useful in determining a diagnosis. That is not the same as saying the device independently diagnoses every stroke. It is a clinical imaging tool used by healthcare professionals.
How often has portable MRI detected an infarct?
Published studies show that portable MRI can reveal ischemic infarcts, while also illustrating why a negative scan cannot reliably exclude every small lesion. The reported percentages measure different things in different patient groups and should not be combined into one overall accuracy figure.

| Study | What was measured | Result | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nature Communications, 2022 | Infarct detection in a 50-patient ischemic-stroke cohort | Portable MRI detected infarcts in 45 of 50 patients (90%); lesions as small as 4 mm were captured. | Shows bedside feasibility in this cohort; it does not establish equivalence for every stroke presentation. |
| Neurology, 2024 | Detection of infarcts on portable MRI among floor-level acute ischemic-stroke patients whose infarcts were seen on high-field MRI | Portable MRI showed 10 of 15 infarcts (67%). Missed infarcts averaged 7.7 mm; visible infarcts averaged 21.7 mm. | Small lesions were more likely to be missed in this study. |
| Annals of Neurology, 2024 | Visual DWI-FLAIR mismatch on 0.064-T portable MRI for identifying stroke patients scanned within 4.5 hours of onset | Sensitivity was 60%, specificity 82%, and negative predictive value 93% in 71 patients. | This evaluated a particular imaging sign and time window, not general stroke-detection accuracy. The authors said prospective validation is needed before using thresholds to guide thrombolysis. |
| European pilot, SAGE/PMC, 2025 | Lesion detection in patients with lesions on high-field MRI | Portable MRI detected 8 of 12 lesions; all four missed lesions were smaller than 6 mm. In blinded review, treatment decisions based on portable MRI matched actual decisions in all 17 patients. | The decision comparison is encouraging but comes from a small, single-center pilot; it does not prove equivalent treatment outcomes. |
These results point to a practical limitation: very small infarcts may be difficult to see on low-field portable scans. A scan that does not show an infarct therefore cannot, by itself, rule out stroke. The measures also answer different questions—lesion detection in some studies and identification of DWI-FLAIR mismatch in another—so none should be presented as a universal accuracy rate.
How portable MRI compares with CT and conventional MRI
| Imaging option | Where it can be performed | Strength relevant to stroke | Important limitation or role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable low-field MRI | At the bedside, reducing transport needs for patients who are difficult to move | Can provide brain images and may support repeat bedside imaging when conventional scanning is impractical. | Small infarcts can be missed; performance depends on the scan protocol and field strength. It is an adjunct, not a universal substitute for CT or high-field MRI. |
| CT, including vascular or perfusion imaging when indicated | In a CT imaging suite | CT remains central to rapid assessment for hemorrhage and vascular problems. | It answers different imaging questions from MRI; a portable MRI finding should not be treated as a replacement for the CT-based assessment a clinician considers necessary. |
| Conventional high-field MRI | In a conventional MRI suite | Provides stronger tissue characterization and served as the comparison imaging in several portable-MRI studies. | May be less practical when a patient cannot readily be transported or a full diagnostic examination is not clinically practical. |
Which scan is appropriate depends on the patient, the suspected problem, timing, and what decisions clinicians need to make. Portable MRI’s bedside access is useful in particular settings, but it does not remove the need for other imaging when clinicians need to assess hemorrhage, blood vessels, or tissue findings more fully.

Is Swoop cleared, and can patients use it at home?
FDA records classify Swoop as a Class II MRI device cleared through the 510(k) pathway. The FDA recorded a substantially equivalent decision for Swoop under K240944 on July 16, 2024, and for Swoop V2 under K250236 on May 30, 2025. Hyperfine’s June 2, 2025 announcement described Swoop V2 as FDA-cleared for brain imaging of patients of all ages where a full diagnostic examination is not clinically practical. The FDA wording describes a clinical-use imaging device whose images are interpreted by a trained physician; clearance should not be read as authorization for consumer self-diagnosis.
Swoop is regulated hospital equipment, not a normal consumer marketplace scanner. The available information does not establish availability for home use or support buying or operating it as a personal stroke test. Anyone with possible stroke symptoms should seek emergency medical care rather than wait for or attempt a home scan.

What further studies are evaluating
ClinicalTrials.gov study NCT06262217, called MIRACLES, evaluates mobile MRI in suspected or confirmed stroke or TIA. Its listed outcomes include diffusion-weighted imaging lesion detection, DWI-FLAIR mismatch, lesion volume, complications, tolerability, and image quality. The record listed estimated enrollment of 200 and was last updated February 15, 2024.
ClinicalTrials.gov study NCT07702968, last updated July 16, 2026, evaluates low-field MRI in patients with stroke symptoms under 12 hours, comparing it with routine CT and final diagnosis; estimated enrollment is 80. These studies reflect ongoing evaluation, not proof that portable MRI has replaced established stroke imaging pathways.
