Instagram said on January 11, 2026, that it had fixed an issue that let an outside party request password-reset emails for some people. The company said recipients could ignore the messages. Instagram and the cited reports did not establish that this email-triggering issue gave attackers passwords or access to accounts, and the reset emails alone do not prove that a new data breach occurred.

Why did Instagram send a password-reset email I didn’t request?

Instagram said an external party could trigger password-reset emails for some users. The company described the issue as fixed on January 11, 2026, and said: “You can ignore those emails — sorry for any confusion.” The statement was reported by TechCrunch on January 11 and by SecurityWeek on January 11–12.

An unsolicited reset email means a reset request was made using your account details; by itself, it does not show that the requester knew your password, completed a reset, or signed in. The January incident was described as abuse of the reset-email workflow, not evidence that attackers had taken over recipients’ accounts.

Was Instagram hacked, or was there a new data breach?

Instagram’s position, as reported by TechCrunch, was that there had been “no breach” in connection with the reset-email issue. The cited reporting does not establish that the people who triggered emails obtained passwords or accessed accounts through that issue. The careful conclusion is that Instagram confirmed a flaw that allowed reset messages to be requested; the available reporting does not confirm a new breach resulting from it.

What is behind the 17.5 million-account claim?

Malwarebytes was reported as claiming that cybercriminals stole sensitive information from 17.5 million Instagram accounts, including usernames, physical addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. TechCrunch and SecurityWeek reported the claim, but the cited sources do not provide an independently verified count or an Instagram confirmation of a new 17.5 million-record breach.

SecurityWeek reported that cybersecurity experts said the allegedly exposed information was not new and was part of a 2022 data leak. That reported assessment is separate from Instagram’s January explanation of why reset emails were sent. The January email wave should not be treated as proof that the 17.5 million records were newly stolen then.

Question What the cited reporting establishes
Could an outside party trigger reset emails? Instagram said an issue allowed this for some people and that it fixed the issue on January 11, 2026.
Did the email issue demonstrate access to passwords or accounts? No. The cited reporting does not establish that attackers obtained passwords or took over accounts through this event.
Was there a newly verified 17.5 million-account breach? No independently verified count or confirmation of a new breach appears in the cited sources. The figure is Malwarebytes’ reported claim; SecurityWeek said experts considered the information old and associated with a 2022 leak.
What should a recipient do? Do not use a link in an unexpected message. Open Instagram directly and check account security activity; take further steps if you find an unfamiliar session or other sign of access.

What should you do with an unexpected reset email?

  1. Do not click the email’s link. Open the official Instagram app yourself or type Instagram’s website address into your browser. This avoids relying on a link in a message you did not request.
  2. Check account activity in Instagram. Review security activity and previous sessions. If the “Emails from Instagram” area is available in your app, use it to check whether Instagram sent the message.
  3. Remove sessions you do not recognize. Meta’s account-security guidance recommends reviewing previous sessions and removing unfamiliar devices.
  4. Change your password if there is a reason to suspect access, or as a precaution. Meta recommends creating a new, strong password and not reusing it on other sites.
  5. Enable two-factor authentication and login alerts. Meta recommends two-factor authentication, preferably using an authenticator app, and turning on login alerts.

If you only received an unsolicited reset email and see no unfamiliar activity, Instagram’s stated advice for this incident was that recipients could ignore the messages. If you do find a session or change you do not recognize, secure the account through Instagram directly rather than through the email.

How do later account-recovery reports relate to the January incident?

They are separate events and should not be merged into the January reset-email timeline. In March 2026, Meta announced a rollout of a Meta AI support assistant for Facebook and Instagram account issues, including password resets. Login-help availability began in selected cases in the United States and Canada; the announcement does not mean the feature was available to every user.

A separate report in June 2026 described a flaw in an AI-assisted recovery path that affected 20,225 accounts. The report said the process failed to verify that a requester’s email matched the email on the account. That later recovery-path issue is distinct from the January problem, which Instagram described as allowing an outside party to request reset emails.
