Electronic components are the physical parts that make a circuit control current and voltage, store energy, switch or amplify signals, sense conditions, or perform several functions at once. The essentials for a beginner are resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, transistors, and integrated circuits (ICs); choosing the right part means checking its ratings and pinout as well as its headline value.
How electronic components are grouped
A useful first distinction is between passive components and semiconductor or active components. Resistors, capacitors, and inductors shape voltage, current, energy storage, and frequency response, but they do not provide power gain. Analog Devices explains that these passive parts do not add energy to a circuit and therefore cannot amplify a signal’s power (Analog Devices: Introduction to Electronic Components and Equipment).
Diodes, transistors, sensors, LEDs, and ICs rely on semiconductor behavior. An IC packages multiple circuit elements and their connections together; semiconductor processes can form transistors and diodes on a substrate (Panasonic Industry: What Is an IC?).
What the basic components do
Resistors (R)
A resistor relates voltage, current, and resistance according to V = I × R, with resistance measured in ohms (Ω). Resistors limit current, divide voltage, set transistor bias, provide pull-up or pull-down states, and help set amplifier gain. To choose one, check its resistance, tolerance, power rating, and package.

Capacitors (C)
A capacitor stores charge in an electric field. In general, it passes more current as signal frequency rises and can shift signal phase. Capacitors are used for decoupling, filtering, timing, coupling, and buffering energy. Check capacitance, voltage rating, dielectric, package, and—where relevant—equivalent series resistance (ESR). Electrolytic capacitors are polarized, so their positive and negative connections must be observed.
Inductors (L)
An inductor stores energy in a magnetic field and tends to oppose rapid changes in current. Inductors are used in filters, chokes, transformers, and switching power converters. Check inductance, saturation current, DC resistance, current rating, and physical size; a part that reaches saturation or exceeds its current or thermal limits may not behave as intended.

Diodes (D) and LEDs
A diode is a two-terminal semiconductor that preferentially conducts in one direction. Diodes are used for switching and for converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC), among other applications (Analog Devices). Check forward-current and reverse-voltage ratings, forward voltage drop, switching speed, polarity marking, and thermal limits. An LED is a diode that emits light; it needs a current-limiting arrangement appropriate to the supply and LED.
Transistors (Q)
A transistor uses a control input to regulate power supplied by an external source, enabling it to switch or amplify a signal. Common types include bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) and field-effect transistors such as MOSFETs. Computers use vast numbers of transistors as microscopic switches representing off and on states (Intel: The Story of the Intel 4004). Before substituting a transistor, check its type, pinout, voltage and current limits, gain or on-resistance, switching speed, and heat dissipation.

Integrated circuits (ICs, U)
An IC combines circuit elements and their interconnections in a single package. Common examples include operational amplifiers (op-amps), logic gates, timers, voltage regulators, memory, microcontrollers, and processors. Op-amps are often used with negative feedback to produce controlled amplification (Analog Devices). Check the exact part number, supply-voltage range, pinout, function, package, and any required external components; ICs that look similar may not be interchangeable.
How to identify and choose a component
Start from the circuit’s job, then verify the exact part against its datasheet or clearly labeled specifications. A matching nominal value alone does not guarantee a safe or compatible replacement.

What beginners need to get started
A practical starter set balances commonly useful parts rather than providing a large quantity of just one value. Starting Electronics’ beginner reference covers resistors, capacitors, diodes, LEDs, ICs, transistors, batteries, switches, potentiometers, photoresistors, displays, loudspeakers, and op-amps (Starting Electronics: Electronic Components).
For basic experiments, consider a range of resistors and capacitors, LEDs and signal diodes, a few NPN or PNP BJTs or logic-level MOSFETs, a timer or op-amp IC, a breadboard, jumper wires, and a multimeter. A component kit can make it easier to begin, but contents, values, and ratings vary. Check its bill of materials and the individual parts’ datasheets before using them in a circuit.
