No. Electronic Design’s “April 1st: AI Discovers Perpetual Motion Machine” is an April Fools’ joke, not a report of a working invention. The article describes a chatbot producing an authoritative-looking solution and plans, but supplies no technical references, measurements, demonstration, or independent replication. A machine that delivers useful power forever without an energy input would conflict with established thermodynamic constraints.
What Electronic Design’s article actually claims
William G. Wong’s April 1, 2025 article is explicitly part of Electronic Design’s humor series. Its premise is that a chatbot was asked to design a machine capable of powering itself indefinitely. The chatbot supposedly returned a confident solution, but the article says it was not forthcoming with references or other details explaining how the design worked.
The punchline makes the joke clear: the author says his AI is “happily powered by its own perpetual motion machine,” which has produced only a “whirring sound.” That is satire, not evidence that a device was built or tested. Read the original Electronic Design article.
Can AI really invent a perpetual-motion machine?
An AI can generate a proposed design, calculations, or a convincing-looking diagram. None of those establishes that a machine works. To support a claim of perpetual motion, a demonstration would need to show a complete and reproducible energy balance, not just continuous-looking movement or an explanation written with confidence.

The essential question is whether the device supplies useful net work indefinitely while receiving no energy from outside and drawing down no stored energy. No working machine, measurements, or independent replication are reported in the Electronic Design article. Its premise should therefore be read as a joke about AI confidence, not a discovery.
Is perpetual motion possible?
Not in the sense of a closed system delivering useful energy forever without an energy source. MIT’s School of Engineering answers “No” to whether a perpetual-motion machine can be constructed. Motion may continue for a time by consuming stored energy, or a device may gather energy from its surroundings. Neither amounts to producing free energy: useful output must be accounted for by an energy input.

That distinction matters because “keeps moving” and “produces unlimited useful power” are different claims. A moving part might coast or draw on an energy reserve; a machine might also capture energy supplied externally. MIT’s explanation is that motion can only approximate perpetual motion when an object consumes stored energy or gathers energy from an external source. MIT’s explanation of perpetual motion.
Where could a seemingly self-running machine get its energy?
When a device appears to run continuously, the first task is to identify and measure every possible input and reserve. Depending on the device, apparent motion or output could be sustained by stored energy, an external supply, or energy from the environment. A careful assessment should account for possible batteries, compressed fluids, electromagnetic coupling, heat, friction, and environmental energy rather than assuming that an input is absent.

To distinguish a real energy source from a perpetual-motion claim, examine the demonstration on these points:
- System boundary: Is the setup genuinely closed, or can energy enter from outside?
- Motion versus output: Does it merely keep moving, or does it deliver useful net work?
- Energy balance: Are input and output measured over the same interval, including stored energy?
- Duration and repeatability: Does the result persist under a defined protocol and recur when the test is repeated?
- Independent replication: Can people outside the original demonstration reproduce the result?
- Losses and hidden inputs: Does the account explain friction, heat, electromagnetic coupling, batteries, compressed fluids, and energy from the surroundings?
Would a perpetual-motion machine get a patent?
A patent application must claim an invention with specific, substantial, and credible utility. The USPTO’s Manual of Patent Examining Procedure §2107 identifies perpetual-motion inventions as examples of inoperativeness that may support a rejection when the asserted utility is not credible. This is not a rule that every unusual energy device is automatically rejected; the examiner evaluates the claimed utility and the evidence. But a claim that contradicts established physical principles needs extraordinary, reproducible support. See USPTO MPEP §2107.
