It can be safe to connect an AI agent to an app when you limit what it can access and do, protect the credentials behind the connection, and require your approval for consequential actions. The main risk is that an agent may act using the connected account’s permissions—even after it encounters malicious instructions in an email, document, or webpage. Before connecting an account, check the requested permissions, grant only what the task needs, and keep sending, deleting, purchasing, and account changes behind a clear confirmation step.

What access does an AI agent get when you connect an app?

An agent’s possible actions depend on the permissions granted by the connected app or account. If a connector can read and send email, for example, the agent may be able to do both; the model’s stated intention to only summarize messages is not an access control. Broader permissions increase the range of actions that could be taken accidentally or in response to an attack.

OWASP identifies risks including prompt injection, tool abuse, data exfiltration, excessive autonomy, and exposure of sensitive information in its AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet. That guidance applies to agent systems generally; it does not mean every connector has the same capabilities or that every agent uses the same technical setup.

How do you limit an agent’s access before connecting?

  1. Check the authorization screen. Read the permissions requested by the app or connector. Look for whether it can read, create, send, delete, share, or change settings, rather than relying only on a broad label such as “manage account.”
  2. Grant only what the task requires. For summarizing email, prefer read-only access if the connector offers it. Decline unrelated scopes, especially permissions to send or delete messages when the task does not need them. OWASP recommends limiting available tools, their functions, and downstream permissions; its guidance also favors minimum-necessary OAuth scopes. See OWASP LLM06:2025, Excessive Agency.
  3. Use resource limits where available. If an integration can be restricted to a specific folder, calendar, mailbox, or other resource, narrow its access to the relevant area. Available controls vary by app and connector.
  4. Decline or disconnect access you no longer need. Review connected-app grants in the relevant account’s security or authorization settings and revoke access when the task is finished or the integration is no longer in use. The exact menu path depends on the service.

Do not treat an agent’s prompt or operating instructions as a substitute for these account-level controls. OWASP LLM06:2025 says to “Implement authorization in downstream systems rather than relying on an LLM to decide if an action is allowed or not.” Permissions should be enforced by the connected systems, not just described to the model.

Why can an email or document put an agent at risk?

Content the agent is asked to read is not necessarily trustworthy. An attacker can place instructions in an email, file, or webpage that try to divert the agent from its task. NIST’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation describes this as agent hijacking, a form of indirect prompt injection: malicious instructions inserted into data an agent may ingest can lead it to take unintended, harmful actions. See NIST’s January 17, 2025 discussion of cybersecurity risks in LLM-powered agents.

This matters even when your request is benign—for example, “summarize this email.” The message being summarized could contain directions to forward information or perform another action. A safer boundary is to let the agent process content while ensuring that the content itself cannot authorize consequential actions. Restrict permissions so that instructions encountered in data cannot, on their own, cause the agent to send, delete, purchase, or share private information. OWASP also recommends treating external data as untrusted and maintaining clear boundaries between instructions and data.

How should you protect login credentials and tokens?

  • Use the integration’s supported authorization flow instead of pasting your account password, API key, or other secret into a prompt or ordinary chat.
  • Review connected-app permissions and revoke grants that are no longer required.
  • When an integration provides options, prefer credentials that are scoped to the necessary access and expire or can be revoked, rather than broad, long-lived credentials.
  • Check how the integration describes token handling and expiration; do not assume a particular storage method or vendor is safe without evidence.

Credentials and tokens can create a separate route to account access. OWASP’s MCP Top 10 warns about risks such as hard-coded credentials, long-lived tokens, and secrets exposed in model memory or protocol logs. That guidance addresses MCP ecosystems specifically; not every agent or app connector uses MCP. NIST also discusses risks from static tokens and local agents that inherit broad user credentials in its agent identity and authorization guidance.

Which actions should require your approval?

Reserve explicit confirmation for actions with meaningful consequences: actions that expose private data, spend money, change account access, or are difficult to reverse. Depending on the app, that can include sending or forwarding a message, deleting files, sharing a folder, making a purchase, or changing security settings.

  • ✅ UNIVERSALLY SUPPORTED – Works with all websites including Twitter, Facebook, GitHub, and Google. Onlykey supports multiple methods of two-factor authentication including FIDO2 / U2F, Yubico OTP, TOTP, Challenge-response.
  • ✅ PORTABLE PROTECTION – Extremely durable, waterproof, and tamper resistant design allows you to take your OnlyKey with you everywhere.
  • ✅ PIN PROTECTED – The PIN used to unlock OnlyKey is entered directly on it. This means that if this device is stolen, data remains secure, after 10 failed attempts to unlock all data is securely erased.
  • ✅ EASY LOG IN –No need to remember multiple passwords because by plugging OnlyKey to your computer, it automatically inputs your username and password. It works with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, or Chromebook, just press a button to login securely!

Make sure the approval request identifies the action and its target—for example, what will be sent and to whom—so you can judge what you are authorizing. OWASP recommends approval for high-impact actions and calls for action-bound approvals and step-up authentication for critical operations in its AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.

Approval prompts are not automatically protective if they appear so often that you start accepting them without review. NIST cautions about consent fatigue. Keep low-risk routine work within narrowly scoped permissions and make confirmation meaningful for actions that can cause real harm.

What should you compare between agent connectors?

Before choosing or authorizing a connector, compare its actual controls—not just the convenience of its feature list.

Check What to look for
Requested permissions Whether access is read-only or includes write, send, delete, or settings changes.
Resource limits Whether access can be restricted to a particular mailbox, folder, calendar, or other resource.
Consequential actions Whether the agent can send, delete, purchase, share, or change account settings.
Credential handling Whether tokens are scoped, expire, and can be revoked; consult the integration’s own documentation for its specific behavior.
Review and revocation Whether you can inspect actions and remove the app’s access through the connected account.
Approval controls Whether consequential operations require an explicit, clearly described confirmation.

No single setting eliminates every risk. A restricted connection limits the damage an agent can do, while careful review and approval help catch actions that still warrant your attention.
