Yes—an unofficial FSR 3 frame-generation mod can work on some older GPUs in compatible DirectX 12 games, but neither installation nor a higher, smoother frame rate is guaranteed. AMD’s analytical FSR Frame Generation implementation has a minimum requirement of Shader Model 6.2, while the mods that redirect a game’s frame-generation path are community-maintained and specific to particular games and versions.
What an FSR 3 frame-generation mod changes
Some community mods replace a game’s NVIDIA DLSS frame-generation path with AMD FSR 3 frame generation. They do not make every game compatible with FSR 3, nor do they turn the game’s original rendering into a different graphics API. The game still needs a compatible rendering path and the temporal information—such as motion vectors—that frame generation uses.
These changes are unofficial DLL or injector modifications. A game update, differences in its API or DRM, an anti-cheat system, or a mismatch between the mod and game version can make a previously working setup fail. Community instructions demonstrate a possible workflow; they are not an AMD compatibility guarantee.
Which older GPUs meet the stated hardware floor?
GPUOpen says AMD’s analytical FSR Frame Generation implementation is backward compatible with RDNA 3.5, RDNA 3, RDNA 2 and older GPUs, with Shader Model 6.2 or newer as the minimum requirement. That is a technical floor for the implementation, not a promise that every GPU, game, or mod will work well.

Check which FSR feature a guide actually enables. AMD’s technology material distinguishes standard FSR 3/3.1 integration from newer machine-learning-based features, which have different hardware requirements. A guide that targets a newer ML-based mode should not be treated as proof that its requirements match analytical FSR 3 frame generation.
Will it actually increase FPS?
AMD described up to a 2x frame-rate uplift for FSR 3 in supported games in 2023. That is an upper-bound figure, not a guaranteed result for a mod or a particular older GPU. Frame generation inserts synthesized frames between traditionally rendered ones; it does not remove the need for the GPU to render the underlying frames.

AMD’s official FSR 3 announcement warned: “How frame generation performs will depend on the capabilities of your GPU and on older hardware you may not have an optimal experience and may see little to no improvement in performance.” If the base frame rate is already too low, generated frames may not make play feel responsive or smooth. Assess latency and frame pacing alongside the displayed FPS.
How to check a mod before installing it
- Confirm the game and rendering path. Verify that the title is a compatible DirectX 12 game and note its exact current patch.
- Read the maintainer’s compatibility notes. Check that the instructions cover that game version and the specific frame-generation method you intend to use. Do not assume a guide for another release still applies.
- Make the change reversible. Back up the game directory and retain the original files before replacing or adding DLLs. Follow the mod maintainer’s removal instructions rather than deleting files at random.
- Check the hardware and baseline. Confirm Shader Model 6.2 or newer and establish that the game’s ordinary rendered frame rate is playable before adding generated frames.
- Test comparable settings and scenes. Compare native rendering, upscaling without frame generation, and frame generation in the same scene. Note latency, ghosting, interface artifacts, crashes, and uneven frame pacing—not just the FPS counter.
- Remove the mod if problems appear. Uninstall it if it causes instability, image-quality issues, or anti-cheat concerns. Do not use an injector in an online game if its rules or anti-cheat system prohibit it.
When a mod is—and is not—the practical fix
A mod may be worth considering when the exact game version is supported, the GPU meets the stated floor, the unmodified game already runs at a usable base frame rate, and the player is willing to test and reverse an unofficial change. It is a less predictable option when anti-cheat is involved, the game has just been patched, or the base frame rate is uncomfortably low.

If the original rendered frame rate is the main problem, a GPU upgrade is the more predictable way to increase rendering capacity. A mod can add interpolated frames in a compatible game, but it cannot guarantee lower latency, artifact-free output, or a useful improvement on older hardware.
