Sensitive synthetic skin can help a humanoid robot hug safely by detecting contact across its body and giving its control system information to adjust movement and pressure. It does not make a hug safe by itself: the robot also needs suitable motion control, force limits, calibration, and system-level safety testing. The Technical University of Munich (TUM) reported that its H-1 humanoid, fitted with distributed artificial skin, could hug a person safely.
How can a robot hug someone safely?
A hug creates contact at many places at once: arms, hands, torso, and sometimes the head or shoulders. A robot must account for that changing contact while it moves. If it applies too much force or moves unpredictably, it could injure the person it is hugging.
Electronic skin, often shortened to e-skin, addresses part of this problem by distributing tactile sensors over a robot’s surface. Those sensors detect contact and pressure. The control system can use the readings to respond to where and how the robot is touching someone, rather than relying only on a fixed movement sequence.
TUM’s H-1 is a specific example, not proof that any humanoid with artificial skin can hug safely. TUM reported in 2019 that H-1’s artificial skin comprised 1,260 skin cells containing more than 13,000 sensors and that the robot could hug a person safely. The report emphasized that safe contact depends on calculating appropriate movements and contact pressures.

What does synthetic skin sense?
There is no single capability shared by every e-skin. Designs differ in the kinds of signals they detect, how much of the robot they cover, and how they perform when stretched or damaged.
Contact and pressure
Detecting a touch or pressure is central to tactile sensing. A robot can use this information to identify where contact occurs and to inform its movement or grip. But sensing pressure is not the same as automatically limiting force: the control system has to interpret the sensor data and act on it.

Temperature, sharp contact, and multiple touches
A 2025 UCL and Cambridge report described a flexible conductive e-skin in which the whole surface acts as a sensor. It could recognize a finger tap, pressure, hot or cold surfaces, damage from a sharp object, and multiple touches. The material contains signals from more than 860,000 tiny pathways. These reported capabilities describe that research material, not every robotic skin.
Stretching and touch recognition
Robotic skin bends and stretches as a humanoid moves. If deformation changes sensor readings, the robot may misinterpret contact. A University of Texas at Austin e-skin described in 2024 was designed to retain sensing accuracy while stretched, addressing that engineering challenge.

Can robot skin feel pain?
Robot skin can detect signals that may be associated with potentially harmful contact, but that is not the same as feeling pain. A sensor produces measurements; software can be designed to classify or respond to them. The research described here does not establish that robots have subjective sensations or conscious experience.
A 2024 Uppsala University neuromimetic tactile system was tested using 22 objects for grasping and 16 surfaces for touching. The researchers described heat, pain, and material recognition as future work. That distinction matters: those abilities were not established as completed capabilities of the tested system.

How do current e-skin approaches differ?
Research systems emphasize different engineering trade-offs. The examples below are prototypes or research descriptions, not evidence of a standardized, commercially available full-body humanoid skin.
| Research example | Emphasis or reported result | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| TUM H-1, 2019 | Modular artificial skin: 1,260 cells containing more than 13,000 sensors; TUM reported safe hugging capability. Its modular cells can allow the system to continue functioning if some cells fail. | That all skin cells or control systems are fault-tolerant, or that the same result applies to other robots. |
| UCL and Cambridge, 2025 | A flexible conductive sheet whose whole surface acts as a sensor; reported recognition of taps, pressure, hot and cold surfaces, sharp-object damage, and multiple touches. It contains signals from more than 860,000 tiny pathways. | That this sheet has been deployed as full-body skin on a humanoid or validated for safe hugging. |
| University of Texas at Austin, 2024 | Stretchable e-skin designed to preserve sensing accuracy while the material is stretched. | A universal performance level across other materials, robots, or operating conditions. |
| Uppsala University, 2024 | Neuromimetic tactile tests involving 22 objects for grasping and 16 surfaces for touching. | Completed heat, pain, or material-recognition capabilities; these were described as future work. |
| National University of Singapore, 2024 | Study-specific reported accuracies: 98.5% for 16 objects, 97.8% for identifying 15 people, 99.0% for 16 fruits, and 98.9% for temperature classification. | Equivalent accuracy for other tasks, test conditions, or e-skin systems generally. |
These systems illustrate why e-skins are compared by more than sensor count. Important considerations include sensing coverage, pressure and temperature modalities, spatial and temporal resolution, stretchability, durability, fault tolerance, wiring and data-processing demands, integration with force control, and cost. The examples above emphasize different parts of that design space; they do not provide directly comparable measurements for every factor.

What are the limits of a hug-safe robot?
A tactile layer can supply useful information, but safety depends on the complete robot. Sensors need to be calibrated, readings need to reach the control system in time, and the actuators must be able to respond within appropriate force and motion limits. The system also needs validation for the particular robot and the kind of contact it is intended to handle.
The cited work consists of research releases and project descriptions. It demonstrates prototypes and laboratory tests, but does not establish a standardized, mass-market full-body humanoid skin. No single sensor count, accuracy figure, or material capability is enough to certify a robot as safe for human contact.
