What does Bluewater Battery Logistics do?
Bluewater Battery Logistics is a battery and solar equipment lifecycle-management company. Its stated goal is to move equipment to “the next owner, next application, or to recycling.” The company says it has managed tens of millions of batteries across four continents; an independent CB Insights profile lists it as founded in 2020 and based in Santa Barbara, California.
Its customers include utility-scale solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) companies, electric-vehicle manufacturers, battery makers and integrators. The company identifies lithium-ion batteries from EVs, stationary storage, marine applications and industrial uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems among the equipment it handles.
How does Bluewater determine what happens to a battery?
The main routes are resale, reuse or repurposing, and recycling. Condition and remaining usefulness shape the route; Bluewater says used batteries above 60% state of health may be suitable for continued use in their original pack or a second-life application such as energy storage or e-mobility. That threshold is the company’s stated criterion, not a universal standard or a guarantee that a particular battery will be accepted.

Resale of surplus batteries
Bluewater says it acquires excess new cells, modules and packs, including inventory from manufacturing overruns and cancelled projects. Its published workflow is to gather detailed battery information, identify a resale channel, arrange agreements between the parties, organize pickup and transport, and support redeployment or remanufacturing.
Reuse or second-life deployment
Where a used battery remains suitable, it may continue in its existing pack or be repurposed for another application. Bluewater describes storage and e-mobility as common second-life uses. Suitability depends on the asset’s condition and the needs of the proposed application; the company’s public description does not establish that every battery above its stated state-of-health threshold can be redeployed.
Recycling and DDR batteries
End-of-life, damaged, defective and recalled batteries—often grouped as DDR batteries—are directed to qualified recycling channels. For a BESS owner, this route can form part of end-of-life decommissioning; for an EV manufacturer or fleet, it can address damaged or recalled packs. Bluewater also lists inventory management, certificates of destruction and audit-trail reporting among its services.

For a business evaluating a provider, useful questions include whether it can assess the specific chemistry and form factor, handle the required decommissioning and disassembly, arrange appropriate hazardous-material packaging and transport, and provide the records the asset owner needs. Experience with the relevant asset type—such as BESS, EV, marine or industrial UPS—also matters.
How are damaged or recalled batteries handled and shipped?
Damaged and recalled batteries can present fire and transport hazards, so their condition affects packaging and handling. Bluewater emphasizes safe decommissioning and disassembly, DOT-compliant packaging, hazardous-material transport expertise, insurance requirements and documentation. It says batteries that are damaged, including those that have experienced thermal runaway, require qualified handling and custom PG1-rated packaging.

Bluewater announced a partnership with Dupré Logistics to expand safe, DOT-compliant redistribution and recycling across the United States. The announcement describes a partnership; it does not establish that every shipment, route or service is available nationwide under identical terms. Businesses should confirm the provider’s capabilities, packaging and transport arrangements for the actual battery type and condition before moving it.

In a 2025 growth release, Bluewater said that over the preceding 12 months it had added 25 MW of decommissioned storage, recycled 1 million pounds of batteries, repurposed 380 MWh and remarketed 200 MW of solar panels, bringing the cumulative totals above. These are company-reported figures, not independently verified performance measures.

How to assess whether Bluewater fits a project
Before requesting a proposal, assemble the information a provider needs to evaluate disposition and logistics: battery chemistry, quantity, cell/module/pack format, location, known condition or damage, and any available state-of-health data. For surplus equipment, include age, specifications and project timing. For a decommissioning or recycling project, clarify the site, schedule, documentation needs and whether the batteries are damaged, defective or recalled.
Then confirm the practical details with Bluewater: the proposed route (resale, second life or recycling), the condition assessment behind it, who is responsible for each decommissioning and transport step, the packaging and compliance plan, geographic availability, and what records or certificates will be supplied. This helps distinguish a plausible disposition route from a complete plan for moving and documenting the assets.
