If you cannot log in, recover access through the console; the steps depend on whether password recovery is enabled.
Is there a default password for the Cisco Catalyst 3560CX-8XPD-S?
No. Cisco’s documented defaults do not define an enable password, enable secret, or line password for the switch. Credentials must have been configured by an administrator, or you will need to use the console-based recovery process. The 3560CX-8XPD-S is listed in Cisco’s Catalyst 3560-CX family support page.
If you can access the switch with another authorized account, ask the administrator to set or share the appropriate credentials. Cisco recommends enable secret rather than enable password because the secret uses an improved encryption algorithm. See Cisco’s password configuration guidance.
What you need before recovering access
- Physical access to the switch, including its Mode button.
- A terminal or PC connected to the switch’s console port.
- Terminal emulation set to 9600 baud, as Cisco specifies in its Catalyst 3560-CX troubleshooting procedure.
- If password recovery might be disabled, a secure backup of
config.textandvlan.dat. Without these files, accepting the reset will remove the existing configuration and VLAN data.
Recover the password when password recovery is enabled
- Connect your terminal or PC to the switch console port and set the terminal speed to 9600 baud.
- Power off the switch, then reconnect power. Within 15 seconds, press and hold the Mode button while the system LED flashes green. Release the button when the LEDs remain solid.
- Follow the boot-loader messages. If prompted to initialize the flash file system, continue.
- At the
switch:prompt, enterdir flash:, then enterboot. - When prompted with
Continue with the configuration dialog? [yes/no]:, enterno. - At the command prompt, enter
enable, thenconfigure terminal. - Set a new privileged password. Cisco recommends an enable secret; enter
enable secret <new-password>, replacing the placeholder with your chosen password. - Save the configuration with
copy running-config startup-config.
If password recovery is disabled
If the boot process reports that password recovery is disabled, continuing requires accepting a reset to the default configuration. Cisco says this reset deletes config.text and vlan.dat. It therefore does not preserve the switch’s existing configuration or VLAN data.

Choose the recovery path based on your situation
| Situation | What to expect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Password recovery is enabled | Console recovery can let you boot IOS and configure a new password. | Use the Mode-button procedure; preserve the existing configuration by following the prompts without accepting a reset. |
| Password recovery is disabled and preserving the configuration matters | Accepting recovery resets the switch and deletes config.text and vlan.dat. |
Do not accept the reset unless you have secure backups and are prepared to restore them. |
| Password recovery is disabled and no usable backup exists | The documented recovery path sacrifices the stored configuration and VLAN data. | Decide whether restoring access with default configuration is preferable to keeping the switch inaccessible. |
