St. Louis Blues defenseman Brandon Carlo was ejected after a knee-on-knee collision with Dallas Stars forward Roope Hintz on Oct. 2, 2026. Officials assessed Carlo a five-minute major for kneeing and a game misconduct. Fans in a postgame discussion disagreed over whether Hintz’s movement left Carlo little time to react or whether the contact deserved the major.
What happened in the collision?
Carlo was making his St. Louis debut against Dallas. Early in the third period, with the Blues ahead 2-0, Hintz reached for a pass that bounced over his stick near the Blues’ blue line. Carlo came in for a hit, and the players’ knees made contact, according to Sportsnet’s report from Oct. 2, 2026.
Hintz was slow to get up and briefly left the game. He returned before Carlo’s five-minute major ended, Sportsnet reported. Yahoo Sports also reported that Hintz returned. His temporary exit and return do not establish a specific injury or diagnosis.
Why was Carlo ejected?
Officials assessed a five-minute major for kneeing and a game misconduct. The misconduct ended Carlo’s night; Sportsnet reported that his Blues debut was cut short by the ejection. Daily Faceoff also described Carlo as receiving a game misconduct for a knee-on-knee hit on Hintz.

Those reports establish the call made during the game, not a detailed explanation of the officials’ reasoning or a formal video ruling on whether the call was correct. They also do not establish that Carlo intended to injure Hintz.
Why did fans disagree about the call?
A Reddit discussion after the game showed competing interpretations, not a representative measure of fan opinion. Some commenters argued that Hintz changed direction while reaching for the puck, leaving Carlo limited time to adjust. Others argued the knee contact warranted a major penalty. The thread raises questions about movement, reaction time and the severity of the contact, but does not resolve them with an official or expert analysis.
Because the available reporting does not include a named rules analyst or attributable explanation from the NHL, neither interpretation should be presented as an established finding. The discussion is evidence that fans disputed the play, not proof that the call was either “soft” or “suspension worthy.”

The reports cited here confirm the on-ice penalty and say Hintz briefly left before returning. They do not establish a later NHL supplemental-discipline decision or a medical diagnosis for Hintz. Without an authoritative update, claims that Carlo was suspended or that Hintz sustained a particular injury should be treated as unconfirmed.
