The STM32F746G-DISCO is STMicroelectronics’ all-in-one development and demonstration board for the STM32F746NGH6 Cortex-M7 microcontroller. It combines a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen, graphics and audio hardware, networking and storage interfaces, expansion headers, and an onboard ST-LINK/V2-1 debugger—making it useful for prototyping applications that use several of the STM32F7’s peripherals.
What is the STM32F746G-DISCO?
Also called the STM32F7 Discovery board, the STM32F746G-DISCO has the ST order code 32F746GDISCOVERY. ST describes it as a reference design for developing an application before porting it to a final product. It is a development platform, not a finished product design: developers can explore the MCU and its peripherals on the board, then adapt their application to the hardware in their own product.

The board is built around ST’s STM32F746NGH6, an Arm Cortex-M7 microcontroller with 1 Mbyte of flash and 340 Kbytes of RAM. The board adds 128-Mbit Quad-SPI flash and 128-Mbit SDRAM, of which 64 Mbits are accessible. See the STMicroelectronics product page and the board user manual for the official specifications.
What the board includes
The board’s appeal is its mix of user-facing multimedia hardware and general-purpose connectivity. The following features are documented by ST for the STM32F746G-DISCO:

What you can do with its display, audio, and I/O
Build a touchscreen interface
The 480 × 272 display and capacitive touch panel let developers prototype graphical interfaces on the board itself. The STM32F746G-DISCO is therefore a natural fit for projects where the UI is part of the embedded application, rather than an add-on tested separately. Graphics demonstrations and STM32CubeF7 examples provide software starting points; the board hardware alone does not determine how responsive or polished a finished interface will be.
Explore audio and camera projects
The codec, MEMS microphones, audio inputs and outputs, and SPDIF input support experiments with audio capture and playback. A camera connector is also present for camera-oriented projects. Check the user manual and the specific example’s requirements before choosing a camera or other external module; the presence of a connector does not establish compatibility with every accessory.
Connect storage and peripherals
The microSD interface is useful for projects that need removable storage. Ethernet and USB OTG give the board additional networking and peripheral options, while the Arduino Uno V3 headers allow compatible expansion hardware to be explored. For shields, check pin assignments, voltage requirements, physical fit, and library support rather than assuming that every Arduino-format shield will work unchanged.
How to program and debug the STM32F746G-DISCO
The onboard ST-LINK/V2-1 means you can begin programming and debugging without a separate debugger. A practical first sequence is to run a supplied demonstration or an STM32CubeF7 example, confirm the programming and serial connections, and then test peripherals one at a time.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose a starting project. Use a supplied demonstration or an STM32CubeF7 example for the STM32F746G-DISCO. Check the example’s instructions for any required software setup or board connections.
- Connect the board and program it through ST-LINK/V2-1. Confirm that your development environment detects the integrated debugger and that the program downloads successfully.
- Check the virtual COM port. If the example uses serial output, open the virtual COM port in a terminal and confirm that the expected messages appear. A successful flash does not by itself confirm serial communication.
- Exercise the target peripheral. Try the touchscreen and graphics example, then audio, Ethernet or USB, microSD, or a camera setup as needed. Changing one subsystem at a time makes connection, configuration, and software issues easier to isolate.
ST’s product page documents the board and links to its software resources; the user manual covers the board hardware and interfaces. ST’s published materials establish the feature set and software examples, but do not provide independent performance benchmarks or thermal measurements.

A microSD card is a straightforward project accessory for testing the documented microSD interface. An Arduino Uno V3-format shield may also be worth considering, but its form factor alone is not a compatibility guarantee. Before connecting an accessory, verify its pinout, voltage levels, power needs, and software-library support against the board documentation and the accessory maker’s specifications.
If purchasing the board, check the exact STM32F746G-DISCO name and order code, along with hardware revision, stock, and regional pricing. The official ST product page identifies the board.
Who should consider this board?
The STM32F746G-DISCO is a strong candidate for developers who want to explore several STM32F7 capabilities on one platform, particularly graphics and touch, multimedia, networking, camera connections, removable storage, or Arduino-format expansion. The onboard debugger and the range of built-in interfaces reduce the extra hardware needed to get started.

When comparing it with another board, consider the I/O you actually need, display and multimedia support, debugger inclusion, expansion connectors, software examples, power options, physical size, and price. The official specifications establish this board’s feature set, but do not provide controlled comparative benchmarks.
