Silicon panels are the mature, widely manufactured choice for conventional rooftop and small off-grid systems. Perovskites and tandem cells have posted striking research efficiencies, but those results do not mean they are proven, widely available replacements. For a purchase today, compare certified commercial modules by their rated power, warranty, degradation rate, temperature coefficient, dimensions and cost—not by a laboratory cell record.
What makes silicon the commercial baseline?
Most commercial solar cells use crystalline silicon, a semiconductor formed into wafers. Its advantage is not a single record-breaking metric: silicon has a mature manufacturing and supply chain, established module production and certification, and extensive field experience. That makes it the straightforward technology to specify, install and assess for an ordinary solar project.
Newer silicon designs—including n-type, TOPCon, heterojunction and back-contact cells—change how a silicon cell is made or collects electricity. They are improvements within the silicon family, not a switch to a different absorber material.
How do the emerging technologies differ?
| Technology | How it works | What its status or trade-off means |
|---|---|---|
| Crystalline silicon | A crystalline semiconductor wafer converts light into electricity. | The mature, predominant commercial platform, with established manufacturing and field experience. |
| Perovskite | A thin-film absorber. Its composition can be tuned to absorb different wavelengths. | Strong research results and potential for tandem use, but moisture, oxygen and UV exposure, ion migration, encapsulation, lead management, large-area production and long-term reliability remain challenges. |
| Perovskite-silicon tandem | A perovskite top cell sits over a silicon cell; each layer converts a different part of sunlight. | A leading high-efficiency research pathway that retains a silicon substrate. Yield, electrical interconnection, reliability testing and warranty evidence still need to develop. |
| Cadmium telluride (CdTe) and copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS/CIS) | Thin-film absorber families, rather than crystalline-silicon wafers. | Both have commercial deployments and use less material per unit area than silicon; their efficiencies and supply-chain profiles differ. A cell-efficiency figure does not describe every module. |
| Organic photovoltaics (OPV) | Uses organic, carbon-based light-absorbing materials. | Can support flexible designs and research into spectral tuning, but broad terrestrial use depends on durability, cost and manufacturing scale. |
| III-V, quantum-dot and other concepts | Use other semiconductor materials or structures; they are distinct approaches, not one unified technology. | Potentially useful for specialized efficiency, flexibility or spectral applications. Broad deployment depends on durability, cost and scale. |
A tandem is an architecture, not a single material: it stacks absorbers to make better use of sunlight. Perovskite over silicon is prominent because it pairs a tunable thin-film top cell with the established silicon bottom cell. Other tandem combinations are possible.

How should the efficiency numbers be read?
Efficiency is the fraction of incoming light converted to electricity under a defined test. A cell result, a small-module result and a commercial module rating are different kinds of evidence. The headline percentages below are research or experimental records, not typical retail-panel ratings.
| Result | What it describes | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 26.1% | Single-junction perovskite cell | Research-cell record cited by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as of April 21, 2024. |
| 33.9% | Perovskite-silicon tandem | Research result cited by DOE as of April 21, 2024. |
| 34.6% | Silicon-based tandem | Experimental result achieved in 2024, reported in IEA PVPS’s 2025 trends report. |
| 19.9% CdTe; 19.2% CIGS/CIS; 14% OPV | Thin-film cell efficiencies | Figures listed in IEA PVPS’s 2025 Trends report; they are cell-level figures, not ratings for every retail module. |
The DOE figures show why tandems attract attention, not what a homeowner should expect from a panel. A higher cell efficiency can produce more rated power from a given area, but it does not by itself establish annual energy production, installed cost, durability or value. Those outcomes also depend on the finished module, site conditions, system design and price.

For a purchase, compare module specifications on the same basis. Rated power and module efficiency describe different things: efficiency accounts for output relative to panel area, while rated power is the panel’s specified output under test conditions. A compact roof may make area efficiency especially relevant; for a small off-grid setup, dimensions, weight and compatibility may matter just as much.
What is—and is not—proven about durability?
Emerging cells must demonstrate that performance holds up outdoors over long periods and across large manufacturing areas. Perovskites are particularly sensitive to moisture and oxygen; UV exposure, ion movement within the material, and the effectiveness of encapsulation are also reliability concerns. Tandem devices add interfaces and electrical connections that must remain stable. Lead management is another issue for many perovskite designs.

There is encouraging early progress, but it is not a decades-long track record. DOE reported that perovskite minimodules with approximately 25 cm² of area and 15–18% aperture-area efficiency had not fallen to 80% of initial output after five months outdoors. That is a useful outdoor milestone—not proof of a long service life, a commercial module warranty or performance in every climate.
Silicon’s advantage here is accumulated manufacturing and field experience. For any actual product, read the manufacturer’s warranty terms rather than assuming all panels of the same material have identical coverage. Check both the product warranty and the performance or power warranty, including the stated degradation terms.

What should buyers compare besides efficiency?
- Module rating and size: Check rated power, efficiency, dimensions and weight against the space and mounting system available.
- Temperature coefficient: This specification indicates how output changes as cell temperature rises. Compare datasheets rather than assuming a technology label predicts the result.
- Degradation and warranty: Review the stated degradation rate, warranty length, coverage conditions and manufacturer support. A lab record is not a warranty commitment.
- Certification and installation: Confirm that the exact module is appropriately certified for the intended market and system, and that an installer or equipment supplier will support it.
- Connectors and system fit: For a small off-grid system, confirm connector type, electrical compatibility and physical fit with the charge controller, battery and mounting arrangement.
- Materials and end of life: Thin films can use less material per unit area, but material profiles vary. Ask about the product’s materials, take-back or recycling options and local requirements; do not assume all panel types share the same recycling route.
- Cost of delivered electricity: Compare installed cost with expected output and service life. Levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is a way to compare cost per unit of electricity over a system’s life, but its result depends on assumptions such as system cost, output and lifetime.
Temperature response, low-light output, module-level efficiency, lifetime and recycling options are product- and design-dependent. Use the exact product datasheet, warranty and applicable certification records for those comparisons; a material family alone does not settle them.

For a conventional rooftop installation or a small off-grid purchase, monocrystalline silicon is the practical default: it is commercially established and available through ordinary solar supply channels. A 100 W monocrystalline panel or kit can be a relevant category for a modest off-grid system, but wattage, dimensions, connectors and warranties vary by product listing. Check compatibility and specifications for the exact item.

Do not treat a perovskite research cell or tandem efficiency record as an ordinary marketplace module. Product availability and evidence can vary by country and over time; if considering a newer technology, verify that the specific module is commercially supplied in your market, independently certified for its intended use, backed by meaningful warranty terms and supported by an installer or supplier.
What has to happen before tandems become routine?
High efficiency is only one part of commercialization. Manufacturers need repeatable large-area production, reliable cell interconnections, competitive manufacturing economics and modules that pass appropriate reliability tests. Buyers and financiers also need evidence that a product’s performance and warranty will hold up in service.
NREL cited a projection of 75 terawatts of photovoltaic capacity by 2050 in its 2024 tandem-commercialization roadmap. That is a projection of future deployment, not a current installed-capacity figure or a guarantee that a particular tandem design will reach mass production.
