The remedy depends on what changed, why it changed, your itinerary and the rules that apply; a disruption does not automatically mean you are owed cash compensation.
What to do first when PIA changes your flight
- Check exactly what changed. Compare the notice with your ticket: flight number, travel date, departure and arrival airports, departure time, connections and operating airline. Keep the original itinerary and each revised version. A delay, cancellation, rerouting and advance schedule change can have different consequences.
- Contact PIA promptly, and the ticket issuer if needed. Use the contact details on your ticket or PIA’s official channels. If a travel agent issued the ticket, contact the agent too. Ask for the reason for the change, a confirmed revised itinerary and the choices available under the rules that apply to your booking. PIA says flight times may change and are not guaranteed, and asks passengers to provide contact details so it or its agent can try to notify them.
- Ask for the choices in writing. PIA’s Conditions of Carriage lists travel on a later PIA flight, rerouting within a reasonable period, or an involuntary refund for specified disruption situations. Ask PIA to identify which choices apply to your case rather than assuming its first proposal is the only one. PIA Conditions of Carriage, Article 9
- Check the whole journey before accepting a new itinerary. Confirm every segment, connection airport, date, travel class and baggage arrangement. If you have a through booking or onward connection, ask how the change affects it. Keep the written confirmation before leaving the airport or buying a separate ticket.
- If you want to stop traveling, ask about an involuntary refund before agreeing to a voluntary change. PIA’s terms distinguish refunds arising from specified disruptions from refunds governed by ordinary fare rules. Ask in writing which applies, which ticket segments are unused and how any paid services are handled.
- Save evidence and expense records. Keep the ticket, booking reference, notices, screenshots, actual departure and arrival times, and receipts for expenses caused by the disruption. This makes a claim easier to document, but keeping receipts does not guarantee reimbursement.
If PIA cancels your flight
PIA’s passenger-rights page says a passenger whose flight is cancelled should be offered a choice of alternative transport or rerouting to the final destination, or a refund of the unused ticket. The page attributes this statement to Article D13 of ANO-001-ATCP-2.0; it is PIA’s published account, and the applicable rules should be confirmed for your itinerary. PIA Air Passenger Rights
PIA’s Conditions of Carriage also sets out three remedies for certain covered cases, including cancellation, failure to operate reasonably according to schedule, and missed connections under specified conditions:
- Travel as soon as possible on another PIA flight with available space.
- Rerouting within a reasonable period on PIA, another airline or mutually agreed transport.
- An involuntary refund under the conditions referenced in Article 10.2.
Ask which remedy PIA is offering and whether you can choose another. Do not assume that these options apply identically to every ticket or disruption; the trigger and applicable rules matter. PIA Conditions of Carriage

If your PIA flight is delayed
PIA’s Air Passenger Rights page describes assistance for certain international delays. It says delays longer than two to four hours, depending on flight distance, call for refreshments or meals and communication facilities; it also says overnight accommodation is to be offered when necessary. These are PIA’s published statements, not a single threshold that applies to every route. Ask the airline how it applies the provisions to your flight.
The same page says a passenger who chooses to discontinue the journey after a delay exceeding five hours may receive a refund for the unused ticket. If you are considering this, ask PIA to confirm the refund treatment before taking an alternative action that could be treated as a voluntary change.

If PIA reschedules the date, time or airport
A schedule change is not automatically a cash-compensation event. PIA says published flight times can change and are not guaranteed. Its Conditions of Carriage says that if a changed departure time or airport is unacceptable and PIA cannot reserve an acceptable alternative in the ticketed class, an involuntary refund is available under the referenced refund article. Ask PIA whether that provision applies to your change and request its answer in writing.
Make sure PIA or your agent has current contact details, since PIA says it may try to notify passengers or their agents of changes. A notice alone does not establish which remedy applies; compare the new itinerary with the ticket and ask about acceptable alternatives.

When compensation rules from another country may apply
Refunds, rerouting, reimbursement for expenses and fixed compensation for inconvenience are different remedies. The law that applies can depend on the route and other circumstances, so do not treat PIA’s published terms or another country’s compensation amounts as universal.
Example: eligible flights to, from or within Canada
For flights covered by Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations, Canadian Transportation Agency guidance says inconvenience compensation may be available when the disruption is within the airline’s control and not required for safety, the passenger was notified 14 days or less before departure, arrival was at least three hours late, and the passenger submits a written claim within one year. The amount depends on carrier size and arrival delay:

These are Canadian statutory amounts, not standard PIA payouts. The Canadian regulations also give the carrier 30 days to pay or explain why compensation is not payable. Check the Canadian Transportation Agency’s eligibility guidance and the Air Passenger Protection Regulations for the rules that apply to your case.
Expense claims are not the same as fixed compensation
For an international itinerary, a claim for documented loss caused by delay may be legally distinct from statutory compensation for inconvenience. Eligibility depends on the applicable convention, the facts and the evidence. Keep receipts and explain why each expense was necessary; do not assume that a documented expense will be reimbursed or that separate remedies can be collected twice for the same loss.

How to make a clear written claim
- Gather your booking reference, ticket, original and revised itineraries, disruption notices, and a timeline of the actual events.
- List any expenses with receipts and briefly explain how each relates to the disruption.
- State the specific outcome you want: confirmed rerouting, an involuntary refund, reimbursement for documented loss, or compensation under a law that applies to your route.
- Send the file through PIA’s official complaint channel or the relevant booking agent, and keep a copy of what you submit and any response.
- If the response does not address your request, escalate with the same complete file. For a trip involving another country, check that jurisdiction’s aviation regulator for the correct process and deadlines.
